This was our first visit to the Arrowhead Rec Area; we went tubing. Tubing required an online reservation, which was an easy process. To avoid delays when you arrive, be sure you also submit your release form(s) online right after setting up your reservation. The reservation can be made up to 14 days in advance with a cutoff of 5pm the day before.
I had a blast tubing with my 4 yr old and 7 yr old. I felt very safe and while we did not bring our helmets, a few families did. Each rider has to be in their own tube but you can "join" tubes and go down together. Since I had a 4 yr old, we had to go down together each time. I frequently saw 3-4 people going down together. You hold on to each others tube handle so you are "joined" when going down. The tubes do get some good speed so we stuck to riding on our bottoms whereas I saw some (mostly adults) go down on their stomachs. I would probably try my stomach if I had a helmet.
In addition to black rubber mats, there is an air filled safety barrier at the bottom. There were some people who were vocal about intentionally trying to ram the air barrier. Unfortunately, hit hard enough, it can jostle something and deflate. At one point, this caused a several minute wait period for everyone else so it could be fixed. It's great when people follow the guidelines to use their feet to help slow down at the bottom, if needed.
In between rides, the tubing line was long at times but they generally keep it moving. There was a time or two where you would see large gaps on the tubing lift. Regardless, I feel we were able to get a decent number of rides within the two hour riding block.
We will be back! The ski hill looks fun and especially great...
Read moreArrowhead is a great place for outdoor recreation in the Claremont area. You can hike up to the top during the summer, or bike it if that's what you're into. There are great views at the top. They have very reasonable rates for skiing and snowboarding. Tubing is also decently priced. You usually pay around $8-10 depending on when you go, and how long you plan on being there. Tubing is priced on 2 hour blocks, unless you go at night, which is 3 hours. I recently learned that they also do ice skating. They have a snack bar, which is nice. They have plenty of restrooms inside, buy many people don't realize there are large, multi-stall restrooms downstairs. I've been told that you can bring sleds and slide down the main hill, but I have not seen anyone doing that in the past few years. The place is completely run by volunteers, so I definitely appreciate everyone's work to keep the place running. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes they have a few particular volunteers who are not friendly and act rude towards people and their children. I don't know if they mean to, but it makes people uncomfortable, as I have heard and talked to many people about this. I'm sure addressing this would solve the issue. Overall, I love going here, and bringing my child here...
