We’ve been loyal customers of this bake shop for a while, regularly buying cupcakes and always enjoying the quality. Naturally, we decided to order my cousin’s graduation cake and 40 cupcakes from them, expecting the same level of service. Unfortunately, this experience was disappointing from start to finish.
We originally requested a clean, plain white cake so we could add our own architectural-themed decorations. The shop told us we can bring our own edible images from Carvel. After learning Carvel no longer sells edible images, we returned and asked if the shop could draw the decorations — they said they couldn’t. We then settled for just a smooth, white cake. This was clearly written on the invoice by the employee helping us.
My cousin even dropped off custom boxes ahead of time for the cupcakes. However, on the day of the event, when I arrived to pick everything up, they couldn’t locate my order at first. When they finally did, I was shocked to find a cake with heavy black borders and “Congratulations ” written across the top — not what I asked for at all. The decoration request was very specific: clean white cake, with the word “Congratulations” written along the border of the cake's base. They scraped the writing off the top, but I still had to take home the cake with the black borders I didn’t want.
To top it off, when I started adding stickers to the cupcakes, I realized they only gave me 38 instead of the 40 I ordered. I called back, and the employee said she would inform the manager, but I never received a follow-up. I was offered just a $24 discount on a $230 order, which didn’t feel like adequate compensation given the multiple issues.
Really disappointed in this experience. While I’ve had good experiences in the past, the poor communication, mishandling of instructions, and lack of follow-through made this feel unprofessional — especially for a milestone event like...

My niece purchased 6 cupcakes from the Paramus location only to get back to work and realize the icing was gummy and cupcakes super stale! Normally I’d let $16.50 slide and take the loss but then I saw the video (included with the pics)! What kind of icing is that? I called and asked could we come in for a refund and explained what was wrong. Since we live closer to the Clifton location, they said we could go to that location. The manager was supposed to call me twice that day and I never received a call! We get to the Clifton location and the worker was super nice but couldn’t tell us what was baked fresh today. Probably NOTHING! We were offered to swap the 6 cupcakes for 6 more but they looked like they were baked two weeks prior! Instead she got approval from the manager for us to get drinks. 10 Snapples instead of stale cupcakes! I haven’t had a Snapple in ages but anything would be better than the cupcakes. My niece goes to drink one yesterday and finds that 6 out of 10 were expired - one from December! I called the Clifton store and spoke to the same nice woman, she said she’d have the manager call me. Again, no call. As a home baker, there is literally no way these cupcakes are less than at least 4-5 days old. Horrible! Why bake hundreds of cupcakes to sit on display when you don’t have a line out the door?! Baking a smaller amount and baking more often would be the smart choice. This place is horrible! I ordered a large order of 200 cupcakes for a corporate function. Spend a nice amount of money. More then half were stale and just unacceptable quality. I called to speak to them about it and was assured that they were baked fresh and that there is no way that the 200 cupcakes I received on March 2nd could have been stale. I think the fair thing to do would be to meet me half way and compensate me back for the product that was not edible. I was treated in a very unprofessional manner and Johnny cupcake himself kept on insisting that there was no way that these cupcakes were stale.
