I've been going to marley station mall since before I can remember. As a teenager it was the mall my mom dropped me off to meet my friends on a Fri or Sat nite. As a teenager I worked at Ruby Tuesdays as a hostess and my brother at friendly's as a cook when it was still in there. He also worked at K&B toy store thru college until they closed their doors. As a young adult I can remember doing my black Friday shopping experience there & Christmas shopping through the season there the 1st year I had a real job and could afford to buy for multiple family members. It's the 1st place both my kids visited Santa and the Easter bunny, which they did many yrs in a row there, my son used to love the christmas Train display that was upstairs during the season. Penny's is where both my kids had their newborn pics taken, and our 1st official family photo. Before arundel mills was built Marley station was the only mall in a 10mile radius at least. The next closest was Annapolis or Columbia. Back then the mall had no issues renting out the stores, and even with all the stores being full the mall never seemed as full of people like A.Mills is. Even on a Fri or Sat night when teenagers came just to hang out with friends it still was a safe place to take your family, and you didn't feel like it was gonna be so crowded that you would never get any real shopping in. I was so sad to see Rocky Run shut down, it was a great restaurant to take lil kids, they could draw on the table and look at a ton of cool memorabilia from differ TV shows/cartoons. It was also a great place to go watch a football game and have a drink in their bar. I was beyond sad to see it go. Unfortunately once Arundel mills opened Marley station has been in competition in order to keep its doors opened. As a life long resident of this area I hope that the owners are able to keep the mall full of stores for at least another 5-8yrs, because if my daughter wants to hang out at a mall with her friends once she's a teenager, marley is the only one I would allow her to walk around without me in tow right behind her. And I despise shopping at A.Mills so I hope it continues to stay open so I can do my Xmas shopping there at least until she's an actual adult. I love that Spencers is still open there. And my kids always loved the little play zone in the middle of the mall, it was a great free place to take them to get energy out in the winter. I also have taken advantage of the play place downstairs, I'm unsure of the name but it's a store full of different types of bouncy houses where a parent can either pay a few bucks for their kids to play for a few hours while they stay & watch or a parent can choose to drop their child off for up to a 2hr span while they shop & child plays. It cost a little extra but they are supervised the entire time by a very friendly staff. I was a little upset to see that the Mall charges for stroller rentals now, as before it was free for many yrs, but they gotta make $ just like the rest of the world. I recently was there to p/u a authenticity certificate Diamond Treasures. My fiance purchased my engagement ring from them. Its right inside one of the main entrances across from one of the more known jewelry stores. The store is a Lil tiny store but he got an amazing deal on my absolutely stunning ring. And they sized it for free and secured the posts that holds the princess cut diamond on top in so i...
Read moreThis mall is okay, has many fairly nice stores and is usually very clean and well maintained. I love how they decorate for the holidays and spend a few hours there at least once a week (and spent quite a bit of money)
However, the music tends to be loud and I have had many issues in the past with their security. they are quite unprofessional.
It may be because I am 18 and look young but a guy in a security uniform nearly grabbed my arm as he asked in a condescending and rude tone whether my parents were around and forced me to show him my ID. I've also had issues when I was wandering around the mall and have been followed before just because I window shop (usually I do buy at least a couple items, but I make minimum wage so usually not much and I prefer to window shop or joke with my friend about ridiculous things).
Today BY FAR was the WORST encounter. My friend and I had just returned back from a day in DC and decided to wander around like we normally do for fun. But he was having a shitty day so I suggested we go sit outside on the concrete benches so that we could talk it out (because the music in the mall was way to loud for me to hear him and I thought it could calm him down)
we hung out there for a little and he was having a hard time getting his thoughts together and I was being patient with him. We had maybe hung out there for 10 minutes when an elderly woman overflowing with bags dropped her purse as she entered the mall (and had been SITTING IN THE ROAD for the last HALF HOUR) my friend ran to hep and handed her her purse back (instead of being a dick and letting someone steal it or run it over) however she came back out a minute later began to accuse him of stealing her phone even though I had watched as he placed the phone in her purse.
a few minutes later we are approached by two men. one in plainclothes flashes his badge like he thinks hes in some police show and asks us if we are on drugs (literally flat out asked"are you on drugs?" rudely) but we were just tired after an entire day of walking and trying to have a moment. then asks if we were shopping there.I had spent all of my money in DC so we had only bought food that day at marley and he seriously laughed at us and told us "well IIII dont count that as shopping" (like i know im not spending $100 today but I DID buy something) we knew for a fact it was that old woman who had called the police just because we were young white people. even though we could have complained she was blocking traffic.
I understand that the mall is private property and they can technically kick out whoever they want. However, the men were extremely rude and rolled their eyes when I denied their accusations. They could have handled the situation more professionally. (as with the many terrible experiences that I had with them before). If we had broken any rules then it was not made clear (nor how long until we could return). I would appeciate if they would at least add a full code of conduct somewhere very clearly on their website or in the...
Read moreWe're military and moved here a while ago. We don't know what Marley Station was like in the "golden days" that keep getting referenced. Doesn't really matter what this mall once was, as much as what it is and where that potential can lead. If this mall is completely closed, that land is extremely valuable. It would just be turned into a condo or rental complex. Some people would like that but it never really benefits the local community except for the people moving into those new builds/rentals. The mall is a joy for us to hang out at and would hate to see it go at least for however long we're in Maryland. It's very clean, peaceful, great to bring our kids, and reminds us of many malls back in our smaller hometowns. There are quite a number of unique stores with very dedicated and wonderful people. Love getting to support local businesses and just having time to even talk with people about services and products without having to deal with a crowd or getting rushed. Marley Station is nothing like Arundel Mills and that's perfect for us. Both malls are great for what they are. Not sure why some people seem to take pride in bashing Marley Station just because it isn't want it used to be or that they want an abandoned building vs a thriving community hub. The mall is getting new businesses and it's standing out as being more specialized vs the typical repeat stores that every mall seems to have. Nothing particularly wrong with common stores but it is nice to be somewhere that we can get products and services we can't easily find elsewhere. It's a very safe mall from the visits we've made there and the single time some teens were running around being disruptive, we spoke up to just gently correct them. Not our kids but if it's putting ours or other kids at risk, we're going to speak up and do something. Honestly, small things might stand out more at Marley Station because they aren't as crowded so if someone is disruptive, it's going to stand out more than if it happened in an overly crowded mall. Security seems very friendly and responsive, so we have never felt unsafe at Marley Station. Highly recommend visiting this mall with fresh eyes and perspective. Appreciate that it does more good for the local community than if...
