Sharkey’s is our forever home for all my kid’s haircuts until she is ready for a salon for adults. They have highly-experienced stylists and operations staff but most notably, Ms. Mai has been styling my daughter’s hair (about 2 years now) since she was a small toddler and we continue to trust her expert eye until today. My kid’s hair style is arguably the most difficult hair cut to do (properly) on small children—short angled bob + proper bangs. Anyone can do a short-angled bob but it is rare to find someone who can do it with perfection on a small toddler (mine loves to move around a lot) every single time. Ms. Mai is a rare talent who will not disappoint. I highly recommend booking an appointment with her for your kid’s next haircut.
More on the establishment: A friend recommended Sharkey’s to us after a couple of haircut mishaps at another haircut place for kids (a chain.) I booked a girl’s haircut which includes the standard wash, cut, and blowdry BUT was excited to see that they also offer nail polish services so I booked that as well. When we arrived for our appointment, we were greeted warmly by the front desk staff and the proprietor.
Looking around, I was pleasantly surprised with the store’s colorful decor and furnishings which are all catered to kids. (To my relief, I saw two rows of padded stools for parents to sit on while waiting.) Overall, the ambiance feels nice and “warm” instead of the stark cold feeling you get from their competitor’s facility (the white cold fluorescent lights probably contributed to it.) Hair can get slippery combined with tile but that is not a possibility at Sharkey’s. Someone is always sweeping to ensure safety and cleanliness. In comparison, I think the facility alone is of higher quality than the well-known haircut chain in our area.
The wash stations have comfortable chairs with soft boosters as needed. Each station has multiple fun shampoo and conditioner scents the kids can pick from. My kid’s hair always ends up healthy, smooth, and soft due to the good quality shampoo and conditioner they use. I also don’t recall ever seeing the wash area wet—they keep it clean and dry at all times.
The kids get to sit in cartoon-themed cars and each hair styling station has a kid’s show playing on the dedicated tv screens. I believe some of the bigger kid chairs also have gaming consoles. The salon practices good hygiene especially with their styling tools sanitized using barbicide disinfectant. The staff is very friendly and patient which is a large factor into how I choose a haircut salon for my kid. I also loved the owner who is more hands-on and integrated with her team. After my kid’s hair styling, she gets her nails done at the nail bar in the corner. She is offered a wide variety of nail polish colors to choose from. After feeling pampered and fabulous, my kid is offered a lollipop, balloon, and fake tattoo of their Sharkey mascot.
The salon is within a shopping center with sufficient parking lot. We never have a problem with parking.

Read moreBooked the cut online for 9:40am when I got there I was told they couldn’t take me because it was a computer glitch. I tried to be understanding and rescheduled for 11:30am. While waiting for the appointment I took my son to Tyson’s mall. When my son sat in the chair for the rescheduled appointment the stylist touched his mixed hair and said she couldn’t cut it because she doesn’t have the right clippers. Not sure what that means because you don’t need special clippers for his hair. I usually take my son to Cartoon Cuts in Fair Oaks mall. They never touched his hair and said that don’t have the right tools for his hair. Totally unacceptable in this day and age. I spoke to a man taking the appointments (I assumed he was the manager because he was in the front) and told him what happened. He didn’t address the actual concern but turned it into something else entirely. He stated that giving my son a haircut would take too long and they have a lot of appointments. I was really confused because my son has a top knot meaning that the stylist is only cutting half of his head. But, nonetheless this establishment cuts hair for kids. When my son first started getting haircuts he was scared and the stylist never said this is taking too long we have other appointments. Now, my son’s hair takes 15 minutes to cut. The manager did come out and apologize and said they can cut his hair but I decided I will take him back to the place we regularly visit because of the experience.
After reading my review, the actual owner called me and sincerely apologize. She said she will reprimand the employee appropriately and offered a complimentary cut. She was very apologetic and understood my concern.
I honestly wish this experience didn’t happen because it shows that we still have a lot of work to do as people in a diverse society. No one wins in a situation like this and everyone is left negatively impacted. I just hope that we can learn from this...
Read moreI took my kids on Sunday 8 year old girl 4 year old boy, this was our second time returning our experience during the first visit is similar to this second and LAST one ( our first time it was a sunday and they were really busy I felt like my kids cuts were rushed) I really wanted to like it because I wanted to do a birthday party for my daughter and some of her friends the the cars and decor is so exciting and fun for kid's and I’d figure second time is the charm right ?NO not at all. The lady that cut my daughters hair asked me what I wanted I told her a trim but can you please cut it in a v shape she proceeded to say “no because she’s little and needs a little girls cut and v shape are more for women so I’ll give her a kids cut” internally I was upset why ask me what I’d like for MY kids hair if your answer will be otherwise ? She did a great job my daughter liked her hair cut, but her response could have been better then when my daughter was getting her nails done the polish wasn’t fully dry I asked the lady could you please fully dry them because last time I came my daughter ended up with smudged nails she gave me an attitude almost as if asking her do to her job bothered her she used the blow dryer for about 15 seconds more once she finished she told my daughter “ just don’t touch anything so your nails done get ruined” and walked away I thought maybe shes having a bad day. The lady who cut my son’s hair not only cut his hair but part of his right eyebrow was trimmed as well, his line up/shape up on both sides are uneven I spent $80 all together which now feels like a waste of money. After our first I was upset with myself for not speaking up because I could of prevented another...
