Pros:
Uptown 78 is the epitome of the friendly neighborhood bar. There are regulars who are always willing to welcome new comers with a cocktail and a smile. The bartenders are among the best personalities around, and don't be surprised if they remember your name and drink after just a few visits. The drinks are cheap and Uptown offers various forms of entertainment such as pool tables, DJ and karaoke. They also play the best music in town.
Cons:
In addition to being made fun of for ordering an Angry Orchard and an Apple Martini (in a manly glass) I once asked for an Uptown 78 T-Shirt /Polo and no respek was placed on my name by the bar owner, manager and bartender so again I ask that all tree of them put some respek on my name and kindly comply with my request. I ain't gone say it no mo!
In short if you're looking for a laid back place to have a good time this is it!
Update on the Respek Chronicles...the journey continues.
About a week later I once again visited Uptown 78 for cocktails after sharing my public review of Uptown. The owner as he usually does greeted me with a handshake and a hug and said "Lowell it's good to see you" After a couple of minutes of us talking he said as if something slipped his mind "Oh I almost forgot!!" He runs to the back and comes back with a T-Shirt and throws it at me..with a slow nod and smile I remember thinking I had finally gained my respek thanks to my first review!! After a couple of seconds of unfolding and examining my prize I noticed the fabric was a bit "feminine" it slowly dawned on me with the added benefit of the bar manager's laughter and snide background remark "it's even cut like a lady's shirt" I had been purposely given an extra large woman's shirt!! I suppose he wanted it to go with the girly drink I ordered, and then we spent a couple of seconds throwing the shirt at each other like a game of hot potato.
My troubles were further compounded by the fact I felt obligated to prove to everyone I could in fact drink a manly drink. I ordered a crown with a splash of sprite, when I took the first sip of my drink I realized I might not have been prepared for that, with perhaps a small amount of shame I asked for a little more sprite that was all the ammunition they needed. The bartender asked me if it wouldn't be better if I had simply asked him for a sprite. He and another regular then started mocking me by calling me Oliver Twist and reciting that one line in a childish pitch saying "please sir may I have some more?"
Although the journey for respek and a MALE Uptown 78 shirt continues, I search for a great bar does not!!
New Update! 03/31/2019
Pros A lot has changed since my last review! If you're not aware Uptown 78 has recently undergone an impressive renovation. red leather seating areas, tap beer, VIP bottle service, matching pool tables felt, granite bar top and a patio area. However, Uptown 78 has managed to retain much of its talented team and still maintains a close knit family like atmosphere among its regulars and its coveted jukebox.
Cons If you read my previous reviews you picked up on the fact I'm usually given a hard time for one reason or another and nothing has changed in that regard, this ongoing feud has unfolded over the span of several months. One day after our usual handshake and bro hug the owner causally asked me "Hey Lowell how old are you?" I said "34" which for most people the response would usually be "Oh you don't look that old." or whatever. But the owner said "Oh OK you need to come with us on our next trip to the DR." and I really why?" He says "So you can finally lose your virginity!" Whether it actually happened or not I heard long drone of oooooohhhhhh from all those present. Unprepared for such a preemptive insult the only thing I could manage to say was " I'm not a virgin." but the more I said it the more unbelievable it sounded and the louder the laughs became so I yelled "I'm not a virgin!!"...
Read moreHas Potential But Maybe That's the Way They Want It? First off it's an older crowd and that's a plus if drama is your concern. You would expect for them to have an in-house kitchen but there's a food truck outside for all of your late night fried gastro desires. The drinks are fairly priced and of decent strength. If they do have an issue it's the music, sometimes. They have a line dance night but expect the line dancers to pretty much command the attention of the DJ. I see this place being able to be packed and reclaim the old Studio crowd but it hasn't happened for some reason. They should be the premier Grown & Sexy venue of SATX after the demise of the Studio but a vacuum happened and that crowd has been absorbed by the younger more volatile spots and open 3 months and gone spots. SATX has been missing a G&S hot spot for the 30+ crowd since 2013. I thought Uptown 78 would fill that void. It hasn't happened. As I said in the title maybe that's simply the way they want it. Nothing wrong with a niche clientele base but you never evolve and remain relevant. I actually believe they are suffering from lack of dynamic promoters in SATX. Promoters should not work exclusively for a venue as it's their job to attract people from varying locations to your venue and create an "experience" not the same reliable atmosphere. Which isn't a bad thing but from a business standpoint that's very "safe" and safe doesn't advertise nor market well. Otherwise it's not a bad place to chill with the older crowd and marvel at their outfits. I've seen some interesting ensembles in there and I tend to show up just to take note of that. The peculiar fashion sense of patrons is always good for a good laugh or four with your drink. Your DJs do a good job of keeping the flow but there are other songs that make people dance besides line dance anthems. There's so much that could be done with this place, potential, potential. Yes this is long but it's because I want that G&S vibe back and not feel like I'm partying with mom and uncles. Fill the void Uptown 78, it's yours...
Read moreFirst I’d like to start by introducing who I am so the lady remembers me. I was the young Hispanic boy in the polo shirt and red nikes. I ordered one Heineken and left my tab open, but I ended up having to leave and closed my tab. The total came out to $3 even and I tipped $2 to make it $5. Well the next morning I checked my bank statement and it said $15. So the lady wrote a one in front of both numbers and stole money from me. I was going to file a claim to get my money back but I figured it wasn’t worth the trouble. Just for people to know when they go there so it doesn’t happen to them it was a black lady not sure how old maybe late 20’s early 30’s. Not going there again and I know nothing will be done on their end but karma will come around. Always check your bank statements because there are scammers like this...
