Whitecap Beach was a great experience, especially considering that in Texas, you don’t often get much of a tropical-style beach setting. The shoreline was clean and well-maintained, which made for a pleasant first impression. However, it was very busy the day we went, so I recommend arriving early if you want a good spot.
One important thing to note is that you’ll be driving on sand to get to your spot, so make sure your vehicle is capable and you know how to handle it. On the day we visited, at least 20 vehicles reportedly got stuck and had to be towed out. A little preparation and caution can save you a lot of trouble.
The water itself was fairly warm — expected for the middle of summer — but it does cool down the deeper you go. The main downside is the murky water with low visibility; once you’re past about 1.5–2 feet of depth, you can’t see the bottom, so watch your step. The slope is gradual, so you can walk 150–200 feet out and still only be in about 4–5 feet of water, though the sandy floor does have uneven spots.
Amenities are basic: restrooms are limited to portapotties and are located far from the main beach area, and we couldn’t find any public showers. On the plus side, there are roaming vendors selling snacks, drinks, and beach parking passes, which is convenient.
Overall, Whitecap Beach is a fun, family-friendly spot if you’re prepared for the crowds and lack of full facilities. Bring your own shade, arrive early, and enjoy a warm day...
Read moreMy family and I visited this beach a few years ago on a family vacation and loved it. We like that it's a drive-up beach where you park in the sand and set up your spot right in front of your vehicle. Makes hauling a bunch of stuff and kids around way easier. Even though this is the same coast line as Galveston, where we usually vacation, the water is a little nicer and the sand is much nicer. It is actually sandy and not compacted like the sand in Galveston. Due to this, we decided to vacation in Corpus Christi again this year and go to this same beach. However, due to the new oil rigs that popped up since we were last here, this visit wasn't quite as pleasant. There are massive oil pockets floating in the water and all along the beach. Imagine my surprise when not even 10 minutes in the water my 6-month old baby is smudged with oil. This was her first trip to the beach and we barely spent any time in the water because after the initial pocket of oil that smeared on her skin, I barely allowed her back into the water and chose to sit out with her while the rest of our family enjoyed the water as best they could while trying to avoid large oil pockets. The oil stained our clothes and skin and we had to basically bathe in Dawn dish soap to get it off our skin. It won't come out of our clothes, though, and most of them were brand new bathing suits bought specially...
Read moreThis beach is very beautiful to me. When they say white sand, it really does have white sand. As you drive in you're actually driving on the white sand and park right in the front of the water.
This beach was buusssy, busier than the North Beach for sure. Maybe because of how attractive it is. As you're driving in, you see humongous beautiful houses and the beach itself won't disappoint.
There's a lot of fishing going on here and people bring there RVs and camp overnight actually. I didn't know this was an option but I liked it. No need to find a hotel. Some people probably sleep in their cars. Everything is well organized, super clean and well maintained.
I took of my flip flops and walked bare foot at the edge of water with water splashing on my feet. It felt beautiful and amazing. The beach is very long so I enjoyed my barefoot 4 mile walk. I walked 2 miles and I didn't even see where the end was. I had to turn back as it was getting dark and had to drive back.
The sand is superfine and very soft when you walk on it. I'll be back for sure.
Oh and you will see a lof of jellyfish and snails here, a whole lot of live snails. I'd never seen a jellyfish before so I don't know if what I saw was...
