UNDERRATED GEM. A piece of prairie in heart of the city. Wide variety of native plants and pollinators. Spring has great wildflower blooms and November is when the tall grass plumes are in their glory, but truly worth visiting every single month of the year.
Almost totally lacking in orientation / information signage but I hear they are working on that. More plant labels near the parking lot and the prairie entrance would help with the educational mission without interfering with the "untouched" appeal of the nature center out in the prairie itself.

Read moreGreat hidden gem for locals in the Bishop Arts neighborhood. The trail feels a bit short, so it's better for a casual stroll, and not really for serious hikers. (Hint: you won't get a full workout here. Maybe try the Cedar Ridge Preserve). That said, it is a very good escape from the hustle bustle of the city if you live closeby. There is parking (7-8 cars max). And they made a landscaping effort to include native flora and plants in the front. Read moreA real gem in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. Twelve Hills is covered with wild flowers. A quiet secluded area with a single circular trail that starts at a small parking lot. Slightly rough with a few small rocks to watch out for. About a third of the trail is covered by trees so you have some shade. There is a delightful "cave" about halfway in formed by thick overhanging branches. We spotted one picnic table on the trail as well. There is no admission fee.
