This museum is in the hometown of NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, and as expected it has numerous displays related to his successful career. However, it also has displays related to other drivers who competed in that era of NASCAR. One thing I really appreciated was information about numerous “small time” racers who raced in the South but never made it to the big times at Indy or NASCAR. These racers were the backbone of racing and were all what many of us could witness ourselves at our local tracks. There was a book stand that had biographies of some of these local racers. One of my favorites, “Tootle” Estes was featured in one of these books. Tootle was fast in anything he drove and was a thrill to see him gradually come through the field and take the lead right before the flag – just the way Kyle Larson does it today on dirt tracks. Tootle passed away at a racetrack – racer to the end. I give bonus points for the old gentlemen sitting around the museum who have a wealth of experience and tales to share if you care to stop and talk. This is not a fancy place, just low-key but good – just like...
Read moreThis is a great museum with tons of racing history. We really enjoyed looking at the old race cars, exhibits, and the moonshine distillery. This would have been a five star review if the employee at the front desk hadn't been so rude. We accidentally walked in the back door (it was standing open) and he treated us as if we were criminals. We apologized, explaining that it was our first visit and as museum was empty of staff and other visitors, we had no way of knowing our way around- Turns out we were touring the exhibits backwards and couldn't see the directional signs. Someone with good customer service skills would have handled such a minor situation smoothly and with courtesy, but this "gentleman" was very lacking. It sadly ended our visit to Dawsonville on...
Read moreBill Elliott, champion NASCAR driver, retired to Dawsonville and where else would the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame be located? And his son Chase Elliott, who is also a racing champion, lives here. So yeah, out here in Dawsonville is the perfect place for this history museum.
It starts with a video of racing highlights and some explanation of Dawsonville's importance and after that, you're treated to a collection of racing memorabilia including trophies, posters, race uniforms and helmets and yes, a number of cars from different race categories. Plenty to see.
We lucked out today with a car show in the front and a barbecue out back. There is a gift shop with shirts and hats and such. There are some "Bill Elliott" fridge...
