Now, the equipment is good. The new leg press equipment is dope. Decent environment. Most of the members are good. However, my complaint goes with the staff. Dom the general manager, Dom, who, number one, canceled my membership only because I left an honest five-star review. And in the midst of the conversation of why I left a review (a conversation he wanted to have by the way while I am clearly on the treadmill getting a workout) well, I thought we were having a conversation, he got defensive and tells me, while I'm on a treadmill, that he canceled my membership. Then I asked him why he canceled my membership? He could not give me a decent answer. Of course, that led to an argument in front of everybody. And then the police was called. Why? Because he did not know how to handle conflict with a Planet Fitness member who respectfully will not be treated with abuse of power (management privilege) and cancel a membership I paid for, for no honest reason nor integrity. I never disrespected him in the middle of our conversation, I did not disrespect him, the staff, nor any member that led to the canceled membership. Dom, simply couldn't take constructive feedback on how that specific Planet Fitness is doing well and where they could be doing better. That's not a way to run a Multi-million if not billion dollar business last I checked. Number two, let's talk about Chris from the front desk. It seems Dom hires people he gets along with other than work ethic. He helped me get my membership transferred to this location (deeply regret but Chris was helpful in doing that so good job for that) with that being said, In my professional opinion, the staff are the first people you see or interact with when walking inside the gym so it matters who you hire. When it comes down to him, it seems like he doesn't care about his job (which is fine, who always does but not when you cleaning the bathroom is big deal to you keeping members from using a clean and healthy bathroom/shower) Not only that, he seems to always be half asleep. Not only that, it seems like you have to pinch the guy to do any kind of work. How do I know? Wet floor signs that linger for days after having moped, I use the showers every day, I'm in the bathroom every day and probably see it clean maybe twice a week. And when he does a good job, I'll tell him and the staff to keep it up and good job. But whenever you tell them to do better, they don't even make it a welcoming environment/space for you to give them constructive feedback. So what is my point? I believe all these reviews are only because the staff do this thing where they like to be cool with you just so you can leave a good review and he on their good side. But if anybody gives them any kind of constructive feedback, they'll turn on you and make it an unwelcoming environment for you, like turning on the lunk alarm. After this and this experience, not only am I never returning to a Planet Fitness. Because that is not how you treat a paying member by canceling his membership because his not your 'buddy' but a man answering your question on how I feel about the gym you manage (I never asked for that survey email to be sent to me lol so I gave an honest answer) The staff was treated with nothing but respect. As a daily 7 day a week member, the whole staff Night and day shift is known by name. There's also Ali, front desk, There's also Sean at the front desk, There's also Julius at the front desk on Saturdays, etc. As a business, you should take constructive feedback or criticism and do better. That's how businesses improve. But this is not a manager that knows management or how to manage based on objective cues picked up and his way of dealing with conflict or disagreemens. And my background in management shouldn't even matter. to have power over me because I leave you constructive feedback. Other than that, it's a decent gym. They have good equipment. They actually have new equipment that I thought was pretty good. However, Dom doesnt make it a welcoming environment for anybody who is not...
Read moreBeware customers! These people are really unethical and are likely to rip you off! My experience has been really bad after I tried to cancel my membership last year in 2014. I was given such a run around to begin with at that time...Finally I succeeded in getting them to cancel my membership after one month of unnecessary additional charges in April of 2014.. Then to my SHOCK, I found that because they had my earlier credit card information, they STARTED CHARGING MY CARD AGAIN ONE YEAR LATER! I suddenly found my card charged this March and April!!! Here are the details so that you can be warned and learn from my experience with these blatant cheaters!!..... I had informed this gym about cancelling my membership initially last year in March 2014 and had told them that I was moving away from the area and that it would be too far for me to use their gym any more. I was told at that time that I could not cancel over the phone and I needed to visit the gym and tell the manager in person! So I did so and was told that the membership would be duly cancelled. Later, I found to my surprise that they still billed me for an additional month of April 2014 even though I had moved on April 4th, had informed them earlier in due time and had not used the gym at all. Then when I called them to inquire about the new bill, I was told that I had to give the notice of cancellation in writing! So I gave a notice in writing. Finally, the billing stopped at that point. Then a year later, to my surprise, I suddenly found a charge in the amount of $20.05 for membership from this gym on my credit card statement on March 2015, one year after the cancellation! I have never visited the gym since March of 2014! When I called them immediately, I was told that I had an ongoing membership there and that they would continue to charge and that I should speak to their manager who would return my call. I was furious and told the lady who spoke to me that I had not had any membership there for over one year, had not used their services at all, that I had moved away from Duluth over a year ago and that is when my membership had been cancelled. In addition, I told her that there were no charges all this time and suddenly this charge had appeared on my bill! I suggested that perhaps there must have been some error? She refused to listen to anything I was saying, was most unhelpful, rude, and told me to wait for a call from the manager. Needless to say, I received no such call and called them back and left a second message. After this to my shock, there was a second charge again of $20.05 on my statement this month in April !This is a business that is completely unethical and is knowingly, deliberately charging me for services that I have never used!! There is no excuse for their behavior! I am a cancer survivor and do not need this kind of unnecessary stresses in my life! I suspect that they must be doing this as a regular practice...I am furious! I wonder how many other people have been charged falsely and ripped off?! I believe that this business needs to be investigated by the authorities for improper and unethical...
Read moreI haven't been in a few years but I had a membership for several months. Just letting you know. Things may have changed.
Typical trip to Planet Fitness involves putting on my expensive gym clothes and taking a pre-workout selfie with an appropriate hashtag. When I get inside I immediately jump on one of the cardio machines, because that's where all the TV's are. I wouldn't want to miss Nancy Grace or Real Housewives, or any of the other important stuff on TV just because I was at the gym! After some light cardio I turn up the pace for a few minutes, until I start to sweat. Then I immediately dial back the pace, because sweating is gross. Go for another selfie at this point if my last one hasn't gotten enough Likes on Facebook. Then it's time to hit the weight machines. I don't want to use heavy weights because that would make me bulky and fat, so I just do high reps and low weight because I want to be tone. I'll do enough reps until it kind of starts to hurt, then I stop. Don't want to risk an injury. At this point I'll take a post-workout selfie so everyone thinks I'm physically fit while subconsciously wondering why I've been coming here for two years and haven't seen any improvement in my physique. Oh well. Sometimes I use the tanning facilities, because the cancer you get from fake sun is healthier than the cancer you get from the real sun. Duh. Then I head home and gorge myself in cookies as a reward for all the hard work I put in at the gym. I deserve it.
But seriously, PROS: Cheap Almost 24 hour access Tons of cardio Nice locker rooms Clean, well organized facility
CONS: Very poor free weight selection Not a very gym-like atmosphere
Planet Fitness is a gym for people who don't want to go to the gym but know they need to go to the gym. It's a place for people to come in, sweat a little, maybe exert themselves, and then leave. If that's what you want this is the gym for you. This is not a gym for athletes or people who actually enjoy working out. Nothing demonstrates this better than the lack of free weight equipment: you have to know what you are doing with free weights or you can really hurt yourself. Planet Fitness opts for weight machines that are less effective but safer and more user friendly. This kind of softcore gym appeals to some people, and to each there own. But if you're an athlete and can afford better, go...
