Mooney's Ben Franklin — Attraction in East Tawas

As far as merchandise goes, this store is one of my favorites to shop at when I visit Tawas. They have lots of fun little souvenirs and decorations, and there is almost something for everyone to buy! However, one of my main frustrations with this store is the treatment of the pet animals that they sell in their store. They stock both terrestrial hermit crabs and African dwarf frogs. The hermit crabs are kept in a metal cage where they are piled on top of each other with no access to food or water. As someone who has owned hermit crabs for 4 years, I can tell you that these hermit crabs are certainly being neglected and abused. Not only that, but they come with a tiny little plastic house that is WAY TOO SMALL for them, and they have painted shells, which are extremely toxic to them. The African dwarf frogs are kept in extremely small tanks, with no pump to filter the water. They are also housing too many frogs in each of these little tanks. These creatures are living beings, and they deserve to be treated with respect and care. Before anyone buys any living creature from this store, I highly recommend doing your own research. Hello, I was in your store the other day and as delightful as a space as it is I have a grave concern about the conditions of the pet hermit crabs for sale.. I’m sure it is not the intention of the store or employees to be abusive to animals but these creatures are sentient and sensitive to their environment. I observed no adequate water, food, shelter, or bedding. Without proper humidity, (80%), the gills of crabs dry out and they actively suffocate. The small metal cage was highly over-crowded and it was clear the crabs were in distress. Countless children were poking and prodding the crabs off of the metal mesh that the crabs desperately clung to. It was, in a word, vile. While this is not an assault on your character it is however cruel and abusive to subject animals to such treatment. I implore your team to consider halting the sale of living, feeling creatures if adequate in-store care cannot be maintained. Witnessing such treatment left me feeling extremely sad and concerned.
