Best place in Eugene for reliable pan dulce! We have tried all the highly rated places in the area, and El Torito conchas and bollilos are always well risen. If you want fresh baked, warm out of oven ones, which I always do, call first bc they don't have a set schedule. (For awhile there were fresh conchas on Sunday 2-4 pm but not on Sat, but recently Saturday after 11 am they were fresh and warm.) The chew of the fresh bollilo is reminiscent of a German brotchen and aa good as or better than some bay area panaderias. They also do a rotation of other pan dulce like mantecadas and seasonal ones like an orange cake loaf so don't be afraid to ask. They do roast chicken on some days, you can see the gentleman grilling in the parking lot area (I think Fri and Sat but do call and check first) and its a great deal and very popular, it was just too salty for us, due to the brine tastes kind of like a ham. Taqueria has been a hit or miss. The flavors are good, but have gotten a lot of gristle and fat chunks in my tacos. The gentleman at the cheese and meat counter in the back is very knowledgeable and helpful, but use your eyes and nose and check, when we do buy we get what looks fresh and has a high turnover. Same with produce. Also an area in one of the aisles with some Middle Eastern items if you dont want to make a trip up...
Read moreI think this must be a good store because its always busy. I personally have never been inside, but once I sent my boyfriend inside to get some Carne Asada. He went to the butcher counter area to try to find it. Whomever was working there talked to him and they acted like they didnt understand what he was saying, and he ended up bringing back some kind of marinated chicken to grill. He knows the difference. It was alright but it wasnt Carne Asada. Anyways, I would love to venture into this store sometime but I'm actually a bit nervous because of the way the man acted as he didnt understand my boyfriend. But it seems to be a very popular store and I'm sure it has better quality ingredients that they dont have at other stores but going in knowing that I may have a negative interaction with the staff, makes me not want to go in. I will continue to recommend this store, to people whom ask if theres a local mexican grocery store, as I have recommended in the past. But if I shop here personally, that remains...
Read more3 times they have tried charging me astronomically when there is a sale. Like a drink is 5 for $5 and she tries charging me $5 for one drink. I have to show them the sale tags. Last time I bought on sale beer there, they tried charging me full price until I made her walk over with me and show her. Then they did the same to my girlfriend with the same exact beer one week later. The cashier acted like she didn't understand us, and they ended up charging my girlfriend twice . No matter what we tried to say it didn't matter. One of them has spoken English to me many times but this time pretended she didn't know any English. I refuse to believe that in 2 weeks , many people haven't bought beer for $3 less than original price and they still dont know it is ringing up wrong. Meanwhile patrons are questioning OUR motives as they impatiently wait in line. Prejudice for sure. I won't be...
