*EDIT* I originally gave a 5-Star rating but have changed it to a three because I have had some unpleasant experiences during subsequent visits. I initially felt comfortable and well-treated when I shopped here. That is why it is so unfortunate that not all the staff are equally adept at serving their customers. I will no longer shop at this location after several visits during which I felt ignored, belittled and profiled. This is a very good option for supporting small business in the Exeter area as it is comprehensively stocked and centrally located. They are able to provide everything one would find at the big box stores only it's a more hometown feel. Like I said it's well stocked, organized, tidy and clean. Although the aisles are narrow due to holding so much product, the lighting is adequate. The best part about going to a local hardware store is that the service is very friendly and staff is well-informed and willing to help. In a smaller setting, it's possible to form a relationship with the staff so they can help you with your hardware, painting or construction projects having a sense of what appeals to you. The prices are also very reasonable. For most items it's comparable to other, big name hardware stores. I bought paint for the same or less than I would have spent elsewhere. I highly recommend this location.

Arjay Ace Hardware on Lincoln Ave. in Exeter, NH is a great local place that has an offering of anything that the big box stores have, and are staffed by friendly and knowledgeable people who know the inventory and just where to find its location. From screws to snowblowers and drills to grills, there is a vast array of products for everyone. They even fill propane tanks. Plenty of parking.

They have almost everything here, and an especially good variety of DeWalt and Ego battery powered tools.

I've been going to this store for a few years and usually find the staff to be very professional. However, when I went to fill up my propane tank last night I was greeted by a very rude employee. When I pulled into the parking lot I took out my 8-month old son and the propane tank and asked the associate if he could fill up my (propane) tank. He then asked me to get back into my car and go to the other side of the building. I then said I'd prefer not to as I just took my son (out of his car seat) and propane tank out of the car. He then proceeds to roll his eyes and continue on with what he was doing (moving a wheel barrel). I was extremely annoyed with his lack of professionalism and called the Manager when I got home. The manager mentioned he would talk to the employee and appreciated my feedback, but never apologized for his actions. Needless to say I won't be going back to this ACE...

Wow, I have been coming here for years but recently had a great experience at Arjays. I came in looking for a fuse for a car charger and Nick walked me through some options and because it was for a device for my car he helped guide me further when they didn't work. We found that it was the cars fuse and not the device and he even came out and brought me some others to try and let me check out while they were closing. The best service you could ask for, hats off!

Adding an update that I had another trip where Dawn helped me figure out a way to attach a rear bike rack to carry a bag. I was missing a piece that attached the rack to the bike and whereas the exact piece wasn't in stock we found another way to attach the bike using a combination of trial and error and exploring each of the departments. It's working great and she really went out of her way to help me find a solution....
