The outside of this Inn lends a nice New England charm and only adds to the quaintness of the town. I will give my pros and cons with our experience in staying here.
Pros: outside grounds and building are beautiful. Good location. Good price but only if you can get it for a low $100 range. We stayed in the $99 room that is discounted because the bathroom is across the hall. It is private but inconvenient. They supply cookies and bottled water every day. Bed felt comfortable and bathroom was average. Staff at the front desk was friendly.
Cons: we made reservations for a normal room one night and the discounted room another. That reservation was lost and we ended up with the discounted both nights. This was a problem because of the disconnected bathroom. The building smells like an old building. We felt it could use some upgrading to maintains the integrity of the time period it was built in. The restaurant did not match the decor or the feel of the rest of the hotel. The flow of style within a hotel only adds to the integrity of it. The carpet was old and didn't match. The room carpet felt dirty and old. The rooms were in need of upgrading because of peeled wallpaper and scuffed up furniture. The bathroom was in need of repair with peeled paper and cracked tiles. This gave the feel of a 2 star hotel. We waited several minutes to be seated at the restaurant and even though they saw us they didn't assist us in seating. We decided to come back later and found the waitress to be impersonal and lacking in professionalism that should accompany such an expensive menu. We waited a long time for our food. We had to ask for the bread basket that compliments a meal. Food prices were way too high. They had a wedding that night and from the third floor the sounds and music shook the house until 10:30-11:00 at night. This was unacceptable for the rest of the patrons. The overall sound in the hotel carries. The doors aren't hung right so they have to be slammed which can Be heard throughout but the hall.
Overall, if you can get this hotel for a low price range than you get more of a 2 star hotel and all the cons would be conducive to a lower end hotel. We wouldn't stay here again unless the price...
Read moreAfter spending 10s of thousands of dollars hosting our wedding reception here, bringing family & friends from out of the country to this hotel, we were treated with no respect at all. During the planning phases we were transferred between 3 different people in the course of a year, causing miscommunications about the party. When we arrived we were only served by the front desk clerk, who had their other duties & seemed uninterested in giving the bridal party attention (although we must exclude the German speaking clerk in this, who was very kind) They set up cocktail hour in the wrong area & only after we showed the contract would they move it. Only 1 employee offered to help us set any decor up for only a little bit. We had to move lawn games from the gazebo ourselves! Again during the party, service was lacking & MOB had to request that they start taking drink orders. The next day is when things really went downhill. As I was collecting decor & cleaning up, again by myself, I was locked out of my room. We went down to the front desk they claimed we were supposed to check out that day! I showed my email with the sales manager which stated that we were to stay until Monday. They said it was too bad but they had booked the room. Basically they were unceremoniously throwing out the bride & groom less than 12 hours after the party. Later as we were packing they called our room & offered to let us stay, but by then we felt so unwelcome & angry about how we were treated that we decided to leave. After all this I was STILL not going to leave a bad review, because I believe small businesses deserve a chance. But as we were packing up, I found some strangers underwear & clothing in our drawers!!! I was absolutely flabbergasted that they couldn’t even be bothered to properly clean their rooms. Overall the service was a complete & utter letdown. We didn’t receive an apology after all of this. I would not recommend anyone get married here, this hotel cannot handle it, they can barely...
Read moreCharming historic hotel, the closest one you can get to Phillips Exeter Academy (just a 4-5 minute walk). Rooms are on the small side, and you definitely feel like you're in an old historic building; however, the beds are comfortable, heating system is effective without being overly loud or breezy, and the bathrooms are nicely updated. Not much storage for clothes -- no chest of drawers, and the only shelves we could use were in the bathroom.
Wi-fi is free but not superfast. There are adequate power outlets throughout the room (on the wall, and also as part of a lamp and an alarm clock). TV service is pretty basic; no premium movie channels or Chromecast ability. Keurig machines are standard, which are a nice touch. No fridge or safe.
The lobby and lounge areas are beautiful, as is the attached restaurant, Epoch. Complimentary continental breakfast includes bagels (with a toaster), prepackaged waffles, cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee/tea, milk, and a few juices. Coffee was quite good. They routinely put out really good cookies in the afternoon.
Front desk staff are friendly and helpful. The first time we stayed here, I felt that some kind of fragrance in the room was making my eyes feel very dry, so I spoke to the front desk ahead of our second stay. They assured me that they use fragrance-free detergent for the sheets, but housekeeping does spray air freshener, so I asked for that not to be done -- and I had no problem this time.
Plenty of free parking on the street in front of the hotel, as well as a large lot in the back. 2 Tesla chargers and one ClipperCreek charger (with a J-1772 plug) are available for guests, but it's $25 per charge (presumably no matter how much...
