In his youth Joseph C. Carter was a legendary college football player at Florida Memorial College. During his college education he was drafted in the army and served in the Philippines from 1943 to 1946. He received his bachelors in physical education in 1950 and after graduation he spent more than 40 years working for the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County parks and recreation departments.
Located off of Sunrise Boulevard this park was previously named Sunland Park. During a period in time when African American communities did not get amenities from the city, Mr. Carter was able to convince the city of Ft Lauderdale to give a 40 acre park with a pool and tennis and basketball courts. He was known for doing recreation programs for the underserved children of the community. Mr. Carter managed the park for 24 years until he retired in 1977. He ended up going back to Parks and Rec and retired for the final time in 1994. To thank him for his dedication to the youth of the city, commissioners named the park after him upon his retirement. Mr. Carter passed away from lung cancer at the age of 84 in 2007.
Today the park is 21.43 acres. The community can of Ft. Lauderdale can enjoy baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, concession stand, grills, a gymnasium, pickle ball courts, picnic area with tables, a recreation center, playground, soccer/football field, tennis courts, track for running, volleyball, exercise path, pool and water playground. Swim lessons are given at the pool. I am sure that Mr. Carter would be pleased to know that generations of children are still enjoying the park he...
