Last minute decision to stop here and so glad we did! We spent about 2 hours exploring the grounds. There are multiple buildings you can walk in and explore yourself with lots of informative plaques and actors scattered throughout a few to tell you more in depth information about daily life at the fort. Medical, trading, chores/meals, family life, etc. Found out it's family run and we had the pleasure of interacting with the owner and his son, they were some of the actors! You could tell that ALL of the actors knew what they were talking about, we were blown away. They put so much thought and time into these exhibits and you can tell! Read moreI was lucky to join the living history weekend at Ft. Madison this past weekend. I had a wonderful time meeting the volunteers and the staff. I loved the buildings and the windows. I volunteer at Ft. Atkinson SHP located near Omaha, NE and we do not have nearly as much light in the barrack rooms.
I have to admit listening to the trains during the night and the mosquitoes were not so pleasant.

We asked tons of questions and they answered each one with facts and enthusiasm. Definitely ask them to fire the musket as well! So cool!
