Summer Wedding Reception - terrible customer service. If you are looking to book an event with them in the summer, I would look elsewhere for a better customer experience. Hopefully, this detailed review will help future brides exploring this as a possible venue option. There is an "EVENTS" coordinator & a "FOOD AND BEVERAGE" coordinator at Solitude. This review is based on my experience with both 'services'. Once we booked, I had a 'meet and greet call' w/ our EVENT coord. Right away, any reasonable question was met with "unfortunately...we don't do that -or- you can't do that...etc." It took a conference call with FOOD AND BEVERAGE to get any traction on some of our requests. After that, the only communication was lots of emails/dates for tastings. NOTE ON THE TASTINGS--you/your partner have to choose THE SAME options, so if you think you will be able to share to get a better sample of the menu, think again. The tastings are CHARGED AND they charge you a resort fee ON TOP of the tasting fee even if you aren't actually staying there (i.e. you drove up for the tasting). When my partner inquired about this, all we ever got was..."let me check" and NO FOLLOW UP! If you are disappointed the mantra of solitude seems to be 'We are sorry your expectations weren't met'...not how can we make it right. We used Solitude's PREFERRED VENDORS for all of our lighting, rentals, etc. Solitude controls the schedule of when things are delivered so if the rental company charges for specific windows, SOLITUDE will leave you to eat the extra costs! The EVENT COORDINATOR for our event, was in/out and hard to locate the day of. I got calls at 7:30AM from the crews of the lighting and rentals because they didn't have her number (she didn't communicate nor represent herself as the point person/main contact for day of!) - I had to coordinate/my partner had to provide oversight because while the demand for delivery was made for that timeline, the event coordinator was nowhere to be found. The baker attempting to deliver our cake couldn't find her and at one point one of the staff thought it was a good idea to deliver the cake using a luggage rack on cobblestone (I can't make this up!). Solitude LOST the bakery items and it took a phone call (after 2 weeks and NO FOLLOW UP) to FOOD AND BEVERAGE to resolve the issue. Again, the only response was "sorry this didn't meet your expectations" and eventually Solitude reimbursed the baker for the lost items. Our Event coordinator only responded with, "we're not responsible for outside decor". [Please explain if Solitude assembled the cake, and Solitude charged a cake cutting fee and thus, disassembled the cake, and the pieces to the bakery come up missing they are not responsible for outside decor!!]--Why does it take a call to MANAGEMENT to get anything resolved?--We also stayed on property, and 25% of our guests stayed on property for the weekend. NOTE If you stay on property in the summer there is NO A/C and it gets HOT! You are supplied with 1-2 fans, but it is barely enough to keep the temps in the mid 70s our room was the coolest at 73. With the THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars Solitude made on this event with food, beverage and venue charges (and they TAX the gratuity) it is disappointing to see such a lack of customer service and a poor customer experience at the planning phase. The serving staff was excellent, the food was good and our guests had a great time, but my positive comments are reserved for FOOD AND BEVERAGE who went over the top to make sure we had a good time, our guests were served well and FOOD AND BEVERAGE followed up. That said, it was relayed that Solitude is in a 'reorganization' of events and FOOD AND BEVERAGE will be handling future events... while I cannot confirm nor deny this I hope this feedback provides opportunities for improvement and training of their EVENT staff who seriously lack customer service skills. If you are looking to book an event with them in the summer, I would look elsewhere for a better...
Read moreA Disastrous Stay at Solitude Mountain Resort - Beware!
I recently had the misfortune of staying at Solitude Mountain Resort, and my experience was so abysmal that I feel compelled to share the details to save others from enduring a similar nightmare. The utter lack of concern for guests demonstrated by the management and their dismissive attitude toward our complaints is alarming.
Although Solitude Mountain is utterly gorgeous, the room we stayed in was not maintained and the management company only exacerbated things. The issues we encountered were not just inconveniences but outright failures on the part of Solitude Mountain Resort and its management company (which we understand is Alterra Mountain Company).
Maintenance Debacles: The master bedroom bathroom door was practically stuck, requiring an unnecessary display of strength just to open it. Phones in the unit were non-functional, a known problem conveniently left unaddressed. A broken window treatment marred our supposedly picturesque mountain view. The top dishwasher rack was not just a minor inconvenience but a constant hassle.
Propane Outage Fiasco: The resort experienced a complete propane outage, affecting the entire area (which, according to an employee, was not the first time). Imagine having no hot water and witnessing a complete failure on the part of the management company.
Communication Breakdown: The front desk phones were not just dysfunctional; they were utterly useless. Attempts to contact them were met with silence, forcing us to repeatedly go downstairs to address our concerns.
Subpar Toiletries (toilet paper, tissue, and paper towels): The resort's idea of hospitality includes providing UBER CHEAP toiletries – a clear insult considering the prices charged for a stay.
Safety Concerns Ignored: A NINE INCH WALL OF ICE at the exit was not only hazardous but had clearly been there for a while. Our complaint fell on deaf ears, and driving over it (in the dark one early morning) resulted in a potential vehicle alignment issue.
Lackadaisical Housekeeping: Upon arrival, there was no liquid hand soap in both bathrooms. This basic oversight, combined with the unresponsive phones, forced us to personally visit the front desk to address the issue. Even after bringing it to their attention, no corrective action was taken. It is disheartening that after expressing our concerns, the only response we received was a pitiful one-night "future" credit, a clear indication of the management's indifference to guest satisfaction. Note: When we checked out, the super nice guy at the front desk asked how was our stay to which I said I don’t want to bore him with what went on but it was not what we expected. On our way home we received a call from the “house loading manager” (Erika) who wanted to know the details only at which I shared them. She seemed to empathize with us and went on to say she feels a two night credit towards our stay is in line but later called back to say, “I was able to talk to our team here and we authorized a one-night credit towards a future stay”
In the end I implore anyone considering a stay at Solitude Mountain Resort to think twice. This establishment's careless attitude towards its guests is a blatant disregard for customer service. Save yourself the frustration, disappointment, and potential safety hazards – there are undoubtedly better...
Read moreI am an intermediate skier and spent 9 days here in early February 2024 and loved every minute of it. Six of those days were powder days, and this is where I learned to love skiing moguls. Favorite runs include Roller Coaster and just about anything off Powderhorn. The wide-open groomers are also great for practicing drills without getting in anyone's way. While there isn't as much area and vertical compared to the mega-resorts, it really wasn't an issue this trip; I did not get bored and feel like I could have spent more time here exploring the back side of the resort. I also appreciate not having to spend more than 15 minutes in the lift line on powder days and weekends. Speaking of which, I found lift lines to be pretty much non-existent once everything is opened up. The atmosphere here is super-friendly; only Brighton beats this place in terms of friendly vibes. I'd say the main drawback to this mountain are the flat parts of the Dynamite and Solbright runs, the former of which can be largely avoided by traversing the slope along the northwest side of the canyon. Really, all of the Cottonwood Canyon resorts are great and have something special to offer. If anything they all tend to have good snow by early February, even on a bad year like this one.
Edit: most of the one-star reviews seem to be either complaints about the parking lot rather than the mountain, or about the fact that a big company now owns the resort and over-charges for everything. The same complaints could be raised about the other three Canyon resorts. I'm not a local and can't speak for the parking since I stayed on-site, but the first few times I came out here I stayed in SLC and took the ski bus with no issues finding a spot at the park-and-ride lots. All four of these resorts are situated in the middle of a canyon; there's only so much room to store idle automobiles and still have enough mountain left to actually enjoy. In terms of the cost, it's expensive but it's on par with almost every other ski resort in North America. The accommodations are similar to those at Snowbird or Whistler in terms of cost versus quality. The Inn is an older building and it's showing its age but I have no major complaints (minor issues: the fridge wasn't working but I just stashed my leftover pizza on the balcony, and one of the two elevators was down for maintenance). My guess is that for many of these small resorts, they end up with a choice between selling out to Alterra or Vail or going bankrupt.
One last disclaimer: my worst ski trip ever was a few years ago - a ten day trip that ended on day three with a broken leg. Any ski vacation that doesn't end with a toboggan ride is a success in my view, and I always keep that perspective in mind when dealing with all the inconveniences that inevitably arise on a ski trip. Even without that view, I'd still recommend Solitude to anyone who loves skiing...
