Beacon of Hope -- Known as the South Jetty Lantern, is a historic landmark. The construction of this lighthouse was completed in June 1918. The lens for this lighthouse went on display in 1916 at the World's Fair in San Francisco.Standing at 91 feet above sea level. The lighthouse's beacon was switched off for five months prior to November 12, 1918 due to mandatory blackout enforcements initiated due to World War I. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1972. After years of rust and decay, a powerful storm collapsed the lighthouse on May 2, 2000. Just six months earlier a proposal was made to move it to Galveston Island State Park where it would be restored and turned into a museum.
