Okay, so... First, this spot is NOT well-developed. The chairlift ends. There's a sorta shack with some minor snacks, and a sorta amphitheater-ish setup for the band. Add the requisite fence with telescopic viewfinders (that some jam when you add the quarters). Interestingly there is a free viewfinder for red/green color blindness (a very nice touch).
None of this matters much. You're not up here for the amenities. You're here for the view. And the view is breathtaking.
It's one of the higher peaks in the Appalachians, and has visibility on two of the three highest mountains. Also, in school we were taught that Appalachia was mostly hill country (and kinda sorta this is true), but these are still mountains up here. This is rough terrain, and it's beautiful. It can also be deadly, so keep your wits about you
Truly, Clingman's dome is a lot higher, but this felt more amazing to behold, with Gatlinburg at the valley bottom, and the mountains rising above you even 2,000 feet above Gatlinburg. Is this area a tourist trap? Damn straight it is. But it's a GOOD tourist trap. It's charming, has some real substance to it, and there's so much to do close by that it would be a horrible mistake to skip this.
However, the site apparently just got new owners, so it could all change soon. But for now, it's incredibly worth the money to go see,...
Read moreWe took the team from Ober Gatlinburg to Mount Harrison. The ride cost $7 per person and includes the round trip. During our visit the temperature drop was quite noticeable, be sure to dress accordingly. The view was impressive and provided a number or photo opportunities. During our visit they had hot chocolate, it took the chill off a bit. There are bathroom facilities at the top. A group of local musicians were playing during our visit, they were quite good and attracted a crowd at times. We stayed at the top for about an hour before standing in a brief line to ride the chair back down to Ober Gatlinburg. For the individuals that have a fear of heights, going up the tram can be a bit of a challenge, however coming down could be a bigger challenge. Proceed at your own risk, I can say the views are worth...
Read moreWell I have to say that this place have been a part of Gatlinburg for quite some time. It is very nice and at the top of the mountain they have several activities that you can do like a mountain coaster, water ride that you will get soaked on, ski lift, rock climbing, indoor ice rink in their mall. The only little issue I had was with one of the older workers. I wanted to ride the ski lift back up to participate on a ride and the older guy was forcing me rudely to get off the ride and wouldnt let me ride it back around maybe it was a safety precaution but I didnt like his output to me that is why I give this location 4 stars instead of 5. But over all it's a nice...
