I feel like I’ve spent my life in San Gabriel Park. When I was 8 (and the old Showbarn was there) I was given my first horse for Christmas inside the Showbarn. We kept her there for years in the pens that used to be behind the rodeo arena that used to be there. Yes a lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same. After years riding with the 4H and the Sheriff’s Posse around the park, in the river and in horse shows, A&M Horsemanship clinics, rodeo grand entries and drill team performances, I spent many high school lunchtimes relaxing by the river with some Sonic burgers. Watched high school football games at the Georgetown Eagles stadium (that used to be there…wow it really has changed) fell in love with my husband cruising through the park (never a single mile an hour over 20mph speed limit of course) feeding ducks and staying away from the geese! Took our daughters there to play on the old wooden playscape (geez that’s gone too, but that’s okay because it was getting splintery) for some family reunions and at least one high school reunion. My older daughter grew up doing the same things I did with horses and 4H before they tore it all down. There were post rodeo dances at the community center (which have now been replaced by the 2 Step Inn, big improvement!) and photos (including high school graduation photos) in the little sunken garden that IS still there. Now I like to run on the trails (that go from there all the way to Lake G’twn…about 4or 5 miles one way plus the 26 mile Goodwater loop around the lake) and hope one day to have grandkids who’ll get to...
Read moreEven though much of San Gabriel Park is currently temporarily closed due to July 4th flooding, we still had a great time at the skate park and splash pad today!
The skate park was very kid-friendly—the kids had a blast riding their scooters and bikes around with plenty of room to play safely. With the summer heat beating down, we made our way over to the splash pad, which was a perfect way to cool off. The splash pad itself is simple but fun, with water fountains shooting up from the ground at different heights to keep the kids giggling.
One downside: there are no covered tables at the splash pad, so on a super hot day like today, shade was hard to come by. That said, the surrounding area was sunny and beautiful, and the kids didn’t seem to mind the heat as much as we parents did!
A big plus is the bathrooms, which are located right in the center of the splash pad and skate park—so convenient for parents with little ones. They were well-maintained and had plenty of stalls, which made our visit much easier.
There are walking trails, dog friendly fields with doggy bag and waste locations throughout.
Overall, San Gabriel Park is a great spot for families, even with some closures. We’ll definitely be returning for more fun once the weather cools down a bit and the whole park has...
