This gem of a park nestled alongside the Delaware River in Gloucester City has improved so much since my last visit many years ago. Me, my wife and our young daughters lived for a time close by in the early 2000's. The park at the time was pleasant, but not someplace one could really spend a lot of time at. A lack of restrooms, limited infrastructure and indifferent upkeep was evident. Wow, how things have changed! I was so pleased to see the many improvements the City has implemented. You can walk on docks over the water, stroll down a newly constructed pathway and speak to the wonderful gentleman (Mike?) that is a fount of knowledge about the history and evolution of Proprietor's Park. A Senior Living Complex next to the park afforded me and my friend the opportunity to engage in conversation with several people that were enjoying the sunny day. (And their dogs!) We also spoke to a younger couple out with their children. It is worth noting that they were Hispanic. Gotta be real here. Two decades ago one simply did not encounter minorities in Gloucester City. And finally let me add the most important addition to Proprietor's Park. A bathroom! A bit overdue but much...
Read moreIt's not much of a park, so why am I giving it five stars? Well... Do you like ships?
Proprietors Park, is located directly across from the packer marine terminal in South Philadelphia, and adjacent to the whole logistics terminal in Gloucester City. If you visit the park, for some fresh air, and a view of the Delaware River, you'll get to watch all the shipping traffic coming up and down the river as well.
At packer marine terminal, you'll watch huge cargo ships coming in full of containers. You can watch the tugboats push them into port, or rotate them. You can see car carriers, unloading brand new Hyundai's and kias onto the dock.
But you'll also see traffic going further up and coming back down river, oftentimes some pretty interesting ships. It's fun to bring your kids, or to feel like a kid yourself.
You'll see. Lots of refrigerated cargo coming into halt, this terminal gets deliveries from Central America of bananas several times a week. And other fruit that come in from...
Read moreI discovered this lovely park a few years ago. while volunteering for a charity. Since then, I have visited many times with my dogs - to walk along the brick-lined paths by the well-enclosed waterfront, sit on one of many benches and read, or enjoy the gazebo on a sunny day. The sunlight seems lights up the water, and the sunset are spectacular. It's adjacent to the Gloucester City Marina. Dogs are always on leashes - thanks to considerate locals and other visitors. as well as enforcement. A play area for children to age 12 is enjoyed by young families, every time I visit. Gazing across the water, there are often many barges from around the world, but there''s a great view of Philadelphia, too. A blue heron may meander alongside the gulls - just watch. A walk through Proprietor's Park is a peek into Gloucester City's future and a glimpse into its'past - many markers recall Gloucester City's history and...
