When I first stepped into Found, an international art gallery in downtown Goshen, Ind., I felt transported to Chicago, Bulgaria, China and Thailand all at the same time. Such is the character of this treasure trove of one-of-a-kind art and antiques tucked in this small midwestern town of northern Indiana.
The recently-renovated building, featuring a tin ceiling, brick walls, and hardwood floors, matches the art hanging in its space and the owners who inhabit it: soul-full, unique and rich in tone, hue, and spirit.
The owners of the gallery--Ann and Keith Graber Miller--travel internationally to Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa, and buy directly from artists, markets, and antique shops there. They also search local U.S. antique and thrift shops and purchase mid-century art, dishes, lamps and furniture to sell at the gallery. One of the gallery’s best features is its varied and limitless supply of mid-century lamps and lamp shades (even the rare double- and triple-shades).
One of the owners, Ann, is an artist herself, who comes from a family of artists, and the gallery also carries this Graber family’s art work: paintings, ceramics, silk scarves, books, cards and jewelry.
Among the international art you will find hand-painted Bulgarian Orthodox icons, hand-stitched Bulgarian and Turkish kilims, life-sized Cambodian buddhas, hand-painted Tibetan bats, hand-painted Chinese peasant paintings, hand-carved Chinese window screens, and a wide selection of jewelry, as well as repurposed products, such as purses, wallets, notebooks, jewelry and aprons.
Everything in the gallery--including the gallery itself--is unique, handmade, one-of-a-kind, and affordable. People travel from all over to visit it, and it definitely is worth the travel. You will not “find” anything like...
Read moreWhat a lovely serendipity it was to wander into Found. My husband and I and our daughter were in Goshen for a college visit and had a couple of hours to spare. Downtown Goshen has a delightful renovated yet still comfy small town feel with that subtle hint that there are treasures to be discovered. Found is one of those treasures. Actually it is full of treasures. And even though it is one of those stores that has a wide variety of beautiful and fascinating items, (scarves, precious doll houses, icons, jewelry, greeting cards, furniture, prints, candles... the list goes and on) they are so artfully and yet casually displayed that they are easy on the eye and one can browse with relaxed pleasure. The owners Herb and Sybil were also lovely about offering information about various items not unlike good librarians recommending an interesting read. I wished my daughter did not have someplace she needed to be, I could have easily spent the afternoon perusing...
