I Love Cathy's! I've been coming here for a few years now since I moved to the area. I am just so glad a place like this still exists. It's always where I buy my books. Last year I finally brought books in to trade for the first time. I was a little overwhelmed and confused at first about how it all worked, but seeing my confusion the person going through my books took a moment to slow down and explain what he was doing. Basically, they buy most of their books from customers. That is how they stock their shelves with all the cool wacky stuff they carry. So, when you bring in books you just hang out for a few minutes while they sort through your stuff to see what they need. When they are all done ( and they are always so surprisingly quick!) they let you know what they can offer you in either store credit or cash. I learned fast to take the credit. It's double the cash amount! And the real deal. That's really what they are all about at Cathy's, loyal customers who buy books, bring some back to trade, and they use their credit to buy more. I think they just do the cash as a courtesy because some people will always want cash, and be difficult about it. But obviously they can't pay you very much for your books, which is why I take the credit and buy books. Its such a great deal anyway because they say all their books are half price, but really I always find such cheap and wonderful things that seemed under-priced to me! Whew, that was a long happy rant, but basically I just wanted to share my love for this wonderful used book store in Havertown's Manoa shopping center. Cathy's, I hope you will be around for a long...
Read moreI visited this place on Set 14th 2023. Much to my joy, the stacks were placed far enough apart that I was able to get my wheelchair through with no issues. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the overwhelming smell of old books. It was absolutely wonderful.
In addition to a huge selection of books, I noticed they sell a few other things like candles, book themed pencil cases, some DVD/ Disc based games, and book themed tote bags. I ended up needing to buy one of the latter for the books that flung themselves at me and demanded I take them home with me. Who am I to refuse?
The clerk was very friendly. I have been looking for a specific book hat I cannot remember the title of for over 15 years. They patiently listened to what I remembered of the plot, and took down my name and number in case they were able to find the book.
All in all, this is a wonderful little place that I hope to visit again in the future. Considering I was only at this shopping plaza to get some Krispy Kreme, I find that this was a much better use of my time and I'm so glad...
Read moreWhile this quaint store is pleasing to the eye: a little book store in a shopping center. I am immediately reminded of a movie. But, that is as far as it goes for niceness. The staff are rude and seem like they are better than you. The prices may be less than the original price, but higher than they should be for a "half price" bookstore. I took in 50 dvds (in excellent to good condition) to sell to them to the store. The lady was quite snobbish with me. She decided to take 25. Ok - no big deal. But offered me $25 store credit or $12.50 in cash. Yes, I took the cash - my huge mistake which I tried to fix. Their ALL SALES ARE FINAL sign was covered by a strand of St Patrick's Day garland, so naturally, I did not see that until the man behind the counter pointed it out to me. I would have done better to take my dvds to the Good Will store down the street or sell them on Amazon instead. No, I will not go to buy or sell anything at this store again. I suggest you...
