I absolutely loved the museum! It had such interesting exhibits, with a lot of historic artifacts, and really fantastically told the scientific story of the plantations, as well as what life was like for the people who immigrated to make their living growing sugar. One section, for example, was about the incredible channel system built in the 19th century that brought water to and allowed the plantations to exist. They were really an engineering marvel; another section talked about the local paper, how it captured life, brought together the community, and is a great record of how life was. A very diverse group immigrated from several different countries, bringing their religions, languages, and culture which largely made Hawaii the melting pot it is today. Everything in the museum was very interesting to me. Everything had lots of context and was clear. I must have read every plaque in the place along with photographing most every surface! Another fun thing is outside they have a bunch of enormous industrial equipment that was used to cut and transport the sugar cane.

This is a curious gem of a museum. I adore looking at industrial machinery from before the era of computerization, and this place is a wonderland for that. There's a lovely green outdoor area with picnic benches and things like giant wheels and gears placed like statues around you. Inside holds a mix of historical items, some more relevant than others, but it provides a great history lesson, not just about the process and challenges of sugar production, but also about the horrific exploitation of laborers and the interesting communities they formed. I had wondered about the source of water on Maui's dry side and found the answers at this museum. There is a cute gift shop as well as a very clean restroom. The ladies at the front desk were friendly. You could spend anywhere from half an hour to a couple of hours here depending how much detail you want to absorb. It's a good place for both kids and adults I think.

Fantastic place to learn about the history and demise of the sugar industry on Maui. Plan to spend a hour or a little more viewing the indoor interactive exhibits, pictures, and artifacts that make you appreciate the Hawaiians and immigrants who worked so hard in this industry. A great way to spend a last day before heading to the airport minutes away. $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 60+, $2 for children 6-12, children 5 and under are free. Military discount $5 for veterans, active, and retired. Located across from the old sugar mill at 3957 Hansen Road. Admission is daily 9:30 to 4:00.

A small museum that tells a big story. Parking is free and the staff super is friendly. The cost is minimal. I purchased the 'Passport to the Past' for $12.00 which allowed admission to the Sugar Museum, Baldwin Home Museum and the Wo Hing Museum. Well worth it. The museum runs down the early days of harvesting sugar cane and extracting the liquid sugar from the plant. There's an informative video that lays out the process. The museum touches on the founders of this sugar company as well as the people that worked the fields. Very informative.
