Very nice beach access! The park has grass and ironwood trees for shade, paved paths including a locally-rare bike path that sadly ends too soon, restrooms with freshwater shower heads, benches facing the water, a reasonable amount of parking, and an old pier you can use for launching small water craft. The excellent Kalapawai Market is right there within walking distance if you need some food. There’s also a canoe clubhouse on the Ka-elepulu canal which débouches at the park, and the off shore area is popular with paddlers and kite surfers. The strand itself is a pleasant white sand beach with a gentle break that makes it great for kids and for strolling along getting a sand pedicure. If you want bigger surf, you can paddle a ways out to the tiny Popoi’a Island where there’s a consistent break that is popular with surfers and outriggers. Beyond the pier at the end of the beach is a small rocky headland with some minor tide pools that sometimes harbor small fishes and invertebrates at low tide. There are only two problems with this place. First, you want to pay attention to that canal: when it’s been raining (usually in winter), the runoff reaches the ocean and it’s pretty foul—you don’t want to be swimming around in that soup, especially if you have any open wounds. The prevailing breeze will usually send that ugly water NW and out of the south half of the park but not always. I would never jump in when the water is brown! The second issue may not bother you as much as it does me, but the snorkeling here is pretty lame. There are usually turtles around, but the water really just isn’t deep enough to maintain good visibility and protect coral until you get out past the island, and then you have swell to worry about. But a lot of the island is like this: Hanauma Bay is popular for a reason. As a volcanic crater, it’s a rare bit of protected shoreline.

Disclaimer - This is a review of just the southeast most portion of Kailua Beach Park. I visited here on 24 January 2019 with a friend and snorkeled and took lots of pictures. We parked on the most southeast portion of this beach near Lanakai Point and while the snorkeling could have been better I still got some decent videos of underwater sea life. The water was a bit murky during my visit there. I will put in a link to my YouTube channel for those videos soon. It will also lead to many hours of other snorkeling adventures during my visit to Oahu. This part of the Beach park has convenient bathrooms/showering facilities near the parking lot as well as plenty of shade for those hot days (which wasn't when we were there). These were some beautiful sandy beaches with blue water to appease the soul. There's also a boat ramp and parking for vehicles with trailers which makes it quite convenient for those with water vessels. With Popoia Island (Bird Sanctuary) about 1300 ft due northeast, you could SUP or paddle over on a longboard and catch a few waves on the breaks on the east side of the island. There were breaks on the west side but didn't see surfers over there. I would imagine it's possible to swim over to the island as well if you're in decent swimming/cardiovascular shape. All in all, this was a great place to visit but make sure you come early if you're driving there as the parking lots fill up rather quickly! Park there for the whole day and pack food. This is a great beach to just chill and watch the scenery and there's plenty of scenery! :D

Kailua Beach Park was the second beach we visited on Oahu, and it offered a different beach experience compared to the North Shore. While the waves here are not as calm, they provide a unique and scenic backdrop for beachgoers. One thing I particularly liked about this beach was the presence of trees. These trees provided ample shade, so there’s no need to set up umbrellas if you can snag a spot under one of these natural sunshades. On the day we visited, there wasn’t a huge crowd, which was a pleasant surprise. It allowed me to fully relax by the sea with the wind in my face while enjoying the tranquility. The park has restrooms, which is convenient for changing or freshening up. However, it’s worth noting that the restrooms didn’t have soap during our visit, so bringing antibacterial soap/ hand sanitizer might be a good idea. Finding parking here can be a bit challenging, especially later in the day. I recommend arriving in the morning when your chances of securing a good parking spot in a quieter area are higher. Kailua Beach Park is quite spacious, offering plenty of room to run around, and it’s a popular spot for people to bring their dogs, so you’ll often see them enjoying the beach too.

If you are visiting from another state and you plan on being at the beach for hours please prepare. This Hawaiian sun is as beautiful as is intense! It’s really easy to get sunburn. We didn’t know that. I am visiting from the western part of the country. Bring sunglasses, hats if you are sensitive to heat, umbrella, chairs, waters, speakers to listen to good music, portable battery chargers to not have to stop places to charge your phone. Bring a carrying cooler to put ice and drinks. I recommend staying at an Airbnb some of those homes have some of the items I mentioned. Our airbnb had life jacket, snorkeling items, sun block, cooler, umbrella and chairs. I supplemented some of it. If you get sunburn your airbnb may have some aloe Vera if not go buy some ahead of time and place it in the freezer. There are many rock formations so bring water shoes from home there’s no need to spend more. Bring a second change of clothes and lotion. There are stations for you to rinse off. I wish the Airbnb would have had a little wagon to carry items in. Follow me in IG or Tik Tok for more detailed reviews.

Don't be mistaken, this is right next to lanikai. If anything it was a bit less crowded and easier to find parking. The water and the sand was just as gorgeous! You do have to circle around few times maybe to find parking however once you do it is a very short walk to the water. There are rinse stations and bathrooms facilities. I suggest going to somewhere nearby to pick up some food and having it on the beach as there are not a lot of options for food and beverages near. The lanikai pill Box hike is also nearby. Some people park at the same parking lot to walk to the entrance of the hike. Wind here can be a little bit crazy so make sure that you have sunglasses or hats because sand will definitely get everywhere. Especially on your food if it is a windy day. There's a little piece of land further out that you can swim to if you're a strong swimmer, or you can body board out.
