Shute Park was a staple in my early childhood. I grew up down the street and regularly visited the park and the aquatic center, often alone at 5 years old because 1995 was a different time. The park got really bad for years but has been cleaned up since.
Bottom line: This is a great park for families with children of all ages. Lots of people from different backgrounds and ethnic groups. Family events throughout the year. Good park, better than a lot.
If you're homeless: Park staff can be rude and call the police for no reason. I was kicked out of two parks two days in a row for being parked. I'm filing a lawsuit, I suggest you do the same if you have/are being harassed.
Pros: Facility is maintained decently well. It's a large park with room for lots of people. Many, Many, Many picnic tables. Trash is regularly retrieved from the bins. Many species of mushrooms grow there. Tons of trees and plants. Parking spots at multiple locations around the park. Bike tools at the library entrance. Large playground, with swings in multiple locations throughout park.
Cons: Young drivers think they're tough and drive by loud and fast for attention, narcissism much?! No place for kicking sports like soccer (in rules) Parking can suck Trash is left in the parking lot to the East pretty often People deal and consume drugs in the East lot sometimes the edges of the property aren't cared for as much. Seems staff cuts corners a lot at Hillsboro Park and Rec. The H P&R staff can be extremely rude and judgmental calling police on suspected homeless people for legally sitting in their vehicle on public property during appropriate hours. Some might say the train tracks on the side of the property is a negative, though I grew up playing on them and they bring good memories. The Native American head carving...
Read moreA beautiful, wasted park. Transients everywhere. We were so thrilled to find this park close to home, as it has so many wonderful play structures for big and little kids alike and it is truly beautiful, with abundant trees and grass areas. Unfortunately, I was very uncomfortable with the drunk person who kept falling off their bicycle while circling us and riding through the woodchipped play area, and I left when that seemingly homeless adult started playing on the little toddler play structure where my 2 year old was also trying to play. There were a few other homeless folks sitting around, although they kept off of the play area. I wasn't thrilled about their close presence, because you just never know, and I don't want to feel that my toddler is in danger, or like I have to keep an eye on all of the homeless people like a mama bear while my child plays. I found out that local officers can stop by if called, to keep this children's play area safe and comfortable for children. That is terrific, but I wish transients were kept away from the park to begin with, at least the children's play area, so that it feels safe even while an officer isn't present....
Read moreNot only is the park clean it's got a public library that shares the same parking lot. It quit and peaceful but most of all safe your kiddos. It's got a very long path that goes all the way around the park and it's got plentiful picnic tables under the beautiful trees that provide plenty of shade for picnics, kiddos and pets alike. I go here every weekend and have for the past 6 months and I've never seen the cops roll up , nobody shooting up in public, no drama at least that I have experienced during this time. People are friendly and you can use the nice clean bathrooms at the library and you don't have to ask permission or get a key or use a code. Not to mention there is a public indoor pool and reck area that has many awesome activities every month for the entire family from toddler to adult. The have plays in the park and music in the ampetheater. It truly is a place I enjoy going and am grateful to have. And as ugly as the world is now days it's a pretty safe place to be and right off the #57 bus line via trimet. It's a safe distance from the road too which is nice . If you haven't been I suggest you give it shot. The kids...
