Upon leaving the Diamond Head State Monument, we made a brief stop at the Kahala lookout point overlooking East Oahu. Vehicles heading to the crater must pass through the semi-dark Kahala Tunnel, which has alternate single-lane traffic regulated by traffic lights to allow pedestrians to walk through the only entrance to the state park.

Short tunnel through the crater wall. You can see the other side from each entry point. There is a separate walking area for pedestrians. Car take turns from each side as it is a one lane road. The Green line takes you from Waikiki to the visitors center where the trails starts.

Diamond Head Tunnel is a unique, historic passage through the crater. Short, cool walk with eerie vibes. Connects trail to visitor area. Well-lit, safe, but narrow. Adds adventure to Diamond Head hike. Quick detour worth exploring. Great for history buffs. 😎
