We are looking for a church to attend. While it is walking distance to our home, we found many of the jokes from two pastors very off-putting and disparaging. The campus pastor took less than 5 minutes to call our neighborhood “sketchy”, call all husbands “clingy”, and having kids “miserable”. I was shocked. Then the head pastor (?) at another campus showed up on a live feed video for the sermon and poked fun at women being bad drivers, being parents of teenagers as a miserable experience. Then the sermon was filled with self deprecating comments about how white he was and how poorly he related to people of color in his early career as an attempt to relate to MLK day. There was even a claim that their congregation is now one of the most diverse in the city, but looking around this campus I saw 95% Caucasian.
Beyond the awkward and off putting jokes, the space was nice, and the music was very well performed. I say performed because it felt like a concert, not a worship service to participate in. The light show, the volume all made it difficult to engage except as a spectator. Some people may love this type of musical performance at church, but it is not my preference.
The final piece that didn’t sit right for us was the fact that the sermon was televised. A giant screen came down and a live feed was played of another campus. My family felt very disconnected from the experience, and it felt like a contradiction of a place that claims community as the most important aspect.
Obviously this was our experience and your...
Read moreI’ve felt increasingly frustrated and disappointed with my recent experiences at this church. My first visit was truly encouraging, Pastor Abe delivered a powerful message in person, and it left a strong impression. However, my second visit, which happened to be on Easter weekend, was quite the opposite. Instead of a live sermon, a large screen was lowered, and the service was broadcast remotely.
This was especially disheartening because I had brought a guest with me, having spoken highly of the previous week’s service. Unfortunately, the following two services were the same, sermons projected on a screen. 1 live sermon out of 4 Sundays attended in a row.
If the intention is to offer a remote experience, it defeats the purpose of physically attending. Watching a service on a screen in a church building feels no different than watching from home, just with added commute and inconvenience.
Additionally, I was disappointed to learn that although the church advertises a singles group, there doesn’t appear to be an active group available. This was another area of interest for me, and the lack of follow-through was discouraging.
I hope the church takes these concerns into consideration and works toward offering more consistent live teaching and reliable, accessible ministries for...
