As someone who loves exploring taco places in Houston, we were very disappointed with Velvet Taco. My wife is gluten free and was excited to see that there was a "shrimp and grits" taco on a corn tortilla. When the taco came out, we were confused to see the grits had been deep fried in batter. I checked the menu again to see if we had missed something about it on the menu and it just said "crispy grits", which was not very clear. I went to the counter and asked the person, who I am guessing was the manager, if the fried grits had flour in the batter. He said,"Yes, is that a problem?" I explained the situation and expressed confusion at the menu and he just said, "Oh. Well here's a gluten free menu." And handed me a small menu that indicated which items on the full menu were gluten free. Having already spent close to $6 on a taco, we didn't want to purchase another one when the issue was ambiguity on the menu. It would not be very difficult to indicate what items are gluten free or to be a little more specific in the item description in order to remove any confusion. The manager's attitude about it did not make it seem like he cared at all. Tacos are usually a safe place for my wife to eat since so many items are naturally gluten free. She has never had any problems before coming to this restaurant.
Overall you do not get good value for your money. The tacos are very expensive, most of them over $5, and are really very small. The queso was great, but again it was very expensive and they only give you this tiny paper tray with maybe 15 chips on it.

Read moreTrendy Tacos ... Think Torchy's Tacos or Pacific Coast .. fusionish and hip, not your traditional tacos. Lots of interesting kinda combinations you'd never find in a Taqueria. I had the Fish and chips. Not very chippy though. The fillet was crisp and well done. The girl child had the grilled flank steak ... Both were on flour tortillas, not asked if we wanted corn. So that may not be an option. But the tortillas looked site made and not from a bag. She like her taco and I liked mine . I didn't get to try any of hers, she devoured it pretty quick. We shared an order of the tots. She, commented that she liked the tots which is something she doesn't usually like. All our selections were good and a nifty change from the traditional taco stand. Most of the originality is in their sauces not the protein or other fillings. Couple of drawbacks.. Kinda small compared to others in this genre. Like 4" tortillas kinda sized. They do use these odd fork spoon combo things. Not that you totally need a fork or spoon when eating a taco, but the tots we had needed something better considering the toppings and such, Only really had Valentina hot sauce and their own red sauce. Their red one tased kinda like a mix between Valentina and taco bell sauce. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Tacos came out on a stand kinda thing with both our tacos on it... We had to ask for a couple of paper baskets to separate our orders. Looked like others in the restaurant had trays. Not sure why we didn't get...
