Never crowded, this is a sweet and inexpensive classic attraction for a little joy next to the beach on the "public end" and also near the beach-side playground and the arcade. There has been an effort toward full restoration, but the condition of the carousel is still wanting. I also wish the tea cup outside the carousel -- a remaining piece from Paragon Park, I think -- actually could spin when you turn the wheel. (I know there are town politics about management of resources, but I also know there are a lot of folks who treasure the carousel and the history it represents.) The carousel ride is worth the money, but unfortunately it runs long enough that kids' smiles turn to mild panic and a look of "when is this gonna stop?" The folks running the carousel are not particularly friendly or enthusiastic with the children, but they do seem to believe the carousel's presence in town is important. Worth a stop-by for a few minutes if you have little ones and have been spending a day on the beach or have older kids playing...

It was the 85th out of 89 carousels created by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, renowned maker of hand-carved carousels in the Philadelphia, or realistic, style. (Toboggan meant roller coaster) PTC #85 included two rare Roman Chariots, each pulled by two horses, carved by the Dentzel Company, founder of the Philadelphia style, and purchased when the last of the Dentzels died. Its scalloped canopy was one of the most beautiful ever constructed for carousel.
