I ate brunch at Toast today in a party of 5 people. I ordered the Eggs and Hash breakfast with Cinnamon Raisin toast and hashbrowns. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious my meal was. The corned beef hash was very flavorful and complimented the eggs well. The eggs were cooked perfectly too. The toast was tasty as well, but cinnamon raisin did cost more than most toast options. My friends and family mostly had good things to say about their food as well.
That’s where the good things I have to say end, unfortunately. The service was just not good. The waitress we had was forgetful and made mistakes on at least one of our orders. One person in our party ordered an omelette with pepper jack cheese and got American. We asked for Tobasco sauce, and never got it. They also gave us soda when we asked for water. For parties of 5 or more, there is a mandatory 20% gratuity. Normally, this would be fine, but the quality is service was not worth 20%. It is also worth noting that there’s a service fee for using a card. This was confusing and, personally, I think adjusting the prices on the menu accordingly would be less confusing and easier to understand.
I hate to write this review, because the food was very delicious and I like supporting small businesses. But, the service not great, which tainted the experience for me.
Edit: In response to the restaurant’s reply and after some rethinking, I have changed my review from 2 to 3 stars, service from 1 to 2 stars, and atmosphere from 3 to 4 stars, and have corrected some of the things that may have been misunderstandings. Yes, that is correct, we didn’t mention those incorrect items to the waitress. We didn’t want to create a fuss and wait for a new batch of food. Our complaint was that the food came out wrong, we never said anything about whether the restaurant was willing or unwilling to fix it. That doesn’t change that it came out wrong the first time. I will admit, I am not an expert on bread, so we may have mistaken the bread type. I don’t see any reason to review the footage, I understand there may have been some misunderstandings on both sides, hence the change in ratings.
This still doesn’t change that we felt that many mistakes were made by our waitress. Maybe she was simply having an off-day. But, I am simply reporting on our experience.
I hope someday to come back because the food was genuinely really good. Hopefully the service will be better next time! If it is, I’ll delete and rewrite a...
Read moreWatch out for unknown charges on your bill. They add an “administration fee” onto your bill. I believe in a standard 20% tip. I do not believe that any other fees should be passed onto the customer other than the food that you purchase. But like most people, I look at the menu for the prices of the food that I’m ordering. I paid an additional $3 over menu prices for my food.
Edit: After reading the bizarre reply from the owner of Toast, I decided to leave a follow up. Extra fees tacked on to restaurant bills are not common. I’ve eaten at many restaurants in the area and Toast is the only one to add an “administrative” fee. Anyone from the area knows this is not common at all. There is no mention of administrative fees on the menu. You state that the fee is posted on the door. The outside door has many signs, but nothing about extra fees tacked onto your bill. The inner door has the smallest note posted well below eye level. See picture. No customer walking in would notice this tiny note to the right of the door. Customers look at the menu for what they will be charged. Nowhere on your menu do you list administrative charges. We were charged an additional $3 over menu prices. Not $0.50!! You state that it’s listed on the bill and receipt. This is true. But that’s the problem!! You are telling customers only when they are paying the bill. A customer should know about charges before they order and not after. Print a new menu with higher prices if you need to. The only charge I expect on my bill is for the prices I see on the menu. I’m not the only review that has commented on surprise fees added to the bill. I encourage others to read your response to your other recent negative ratings. I’ve never seen a restaurant owner respond so aggressively. The owner is clearly unhinged always attacking reviewers that state problems. She often states how she combed thru video footage and quotes conversations verbatim. Do not expect any privacy at Toast. She’s recording everything you say or do. Very concerning. I recently ate at the new Stevie G’s breakfast place in Cohasset. Instead of hidden charges, they actually give a 3% cash discount. And honestly their food is a step above Toast. Stars in Hingham also has a great breakfast and no extra fees added to your bill. The recent string of negative comments for Toast seems to indicate an...
Read moreMy partner and I were attending for the first time, enjoying a lovely breakfast with some morning cocktails. Staff was fantastic, attentive but not hovering, leaving you to feel not rushed. The food was fantastic, eggs benedict and the wave. Cocktails: cranberry ball (fancy- pinky out), and orange cran mimosa. Coffee was delicious - drinking black. The ambiance is very casual and I was happy to see the support for LGBT proudly posted. The overall experience was incredible... But the ultimate show of true business management became evident when "Karen" arrived in her brown 90s astrovan. Karen comes to the door no mask, the owner polite informed of the state regulations which, Karen rebuttled was not law. The owner continued to offer to serve them, if they would wear a mask, once again stating the regulations made by state. Karen continues to refuse, as well as, loop in her minion who is becoming triggered... Now Karen and Mr. minion are escalated. The owner's son, stand by his mother for support, and Mr. Minion know starts asking of he is being threatened... (No, Sir, you're just being rude.) Meanwhile, Karen now presents a mask, which she has had the whole time, never putting it on. At this point the owner politely addresses this disturbance and asks Karen and Minion to leave. The owner kept her cool despite Karen's many attempts to make things about inequity and law. I appreciate the owner supporting her business, state regulations, her staff, her customers with integrity and class. Kudos, Toast,...
