Easily drivable but better to walk the winding lanes and the short rises of this beautiful old cemetery. Old Gray was founded in 1850 and is a classic example of the "park" style of cemetery, much like Hollywood in Richmond or Auburn near Boston. Starting with the beautiful entrance on Broadway, you need to also spot the classic stone wall perimeter. Note that the Knoxville National Cemetery has a separate entrance. Famous interments here include Confederate generals, US Congressmen and Senators, Knoxville mayors, Tennessee governors and even World War I pilot Charles McGhee Tyson who was the namesake for Knoxville's airport (the code is TYS).

Beautiful and serene. There is a rich civil war history in this cemetery and if you have the time, a great opportunity to lean more about the families and their roles in the conflict. It is worth noting that the cemetery is located near an underserved community, which is isolated from the main part of the downtown. And, although I did not have any negative interactions, the level of poverty is extreme by many standards and I did not feel 100% secure in the neighbourhood. The cemetery driveway is in a state of disrepair, so be careful if you have mobility issues.

I have been doing a blog and photography on abandoned and historical places and came across this place in a Google search. It is the most beautiful graveyard I've ever seen. The city outside the gates seems like a little bit of a rough place but the graveyard itself is like a whole other world. If you go there also look into the history of not only the graveyard itself but some of the people buried in it. You will find a lot of interesting information on some of the people there. Definitely will be going back.

Not Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY (gold standard for "old cemeteries"), but beautiful in its own right! The pink flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida rubra) are some of the best I've seen for color!

This place was awesome!!! I could've spent all day looking at these headstones. There were so many. This cemetery is very old. The oldest headstone I found was from a man born in 1795.

How do you rate a cemetery? It is for sure interesting to look at. We just happened upon this and it is an older cemetery that we actually enjoyed walked through.
