I was mildly impressed with the food at this place and it felt like it's a splurge only kind of restaurant. The food is so high and fat and cholesterol that you wouldn't want to eat here all the time it would make you sick. But the food I ate was pretty decent It just took so long to get it that it was sort of an anti-climactic. There are a lot of people trying to get in here to this restaurant is a good thing but it also makes it hard for the restaurant. The server behind the bar was really not attentive when we sat at the bar she seemed a little miffed that we had come to the bar and then when we didn't order alcohol because we were just there to eat she seemed even more annoyed. I have to say that there are either understaffed or just have a bunch of people who don't really need to be doing this for a living. They seem very annoyed with their work and not really much happiness going on in this place. They all just seem stressed out and tired. But it was Sunday so I understand that still it made for a miserable time at this place. There were a couple of things that were really good to eat but it was hit or miss. for everyone thing I liked there were two things that were not really great. I guess if I knew exactly what to order here I could miss out on some of the items that shouldn't be on the menu. After a while people will figure out how heavy this food is and they'll go to the waste side just like all of the other restaurants of this kind. I'm surprised that they're in the old city because this is a restaurant that would do much better where people have diets like this. Oh and if you even think that you could get a gluten-free option here then you're mistaken This is not a place to go if you have a poor digestive health. If you have a sensitive stomach I wouldn't go to this place at all actually. This place is a little bit nicer than Myrtle's chicken but not much. And with the service like it is I'm not sure I'll come back...
Read moreSouthern Grit is hands down my new favorite restaurant! My girlfriend and I ordered the fried green tomatoes for our appetizer. The explosion of flavors in my mouth sent my tongue into shock. I consider myself quite the connoisseur of fried green tomatoes after spending 12 years in the culinary capital of the south, Charleston SC. Take my word and order those bad boys! We also ordered and shared a half chicken meal. The only way to accurately describe the chicken would be “perfection”. It was fried and seasoned to crisp perfection. For our sides we ordered macaroni and cheese, house salads with blue cheese dressing. The macaroni was phenomenal and had great texture and a homemade cheese sauce. The produce in the salad was fresh, crisp and colorful. The blue cheese dressing is top shelf, and if I was guessing, homemade. The SG burger was also thoroughly enjoyed, so much so, that I ordered a second one to-go. The food presentation was stellar. They say you eat with your eyes first, my eyes were just as pleased as my belly. Our server Josh paid close attention to our table and ensured we had everything we needed and then some at all times. The owner hand delivered our to-go burger and inquired about our experience. It is so refreshing to find a restaurant that has such high quality food at reasonable prices. You can always tell when a meal is prepared with love. We are excited to return and try out more of the wonderful appetizers and entrées on the menu. I highly recommend Southern Grit to anyone who is looking for a good meal, or even a handcrafted cocktail. Southern Grit has set the bar high for the restaurant scene in Knoxville! Thank you all for the wonderful...
Read moreWe went here based on the reviews alone and I'm so glad we did. Service was great, but a little slow and I think it had to do with being prime brunch time. For perspective we waited 30 mins for our appetizer and 45 - 60 minutes for our entrees, but the server was attentive and communicated updates about our order which was appreciated.
The food was worth the wait. We ordered the pimento cheese dip that was recommended by the server, The Everett with sweet potato fries, "The Guy" Burger with fried brussels, and The Big Easy with fried okra.
The pimento cheese dip with the honey drizzle was very good and I really liked how they buttered and toasted the saltine crackers.
The Everett was perfect, the server asked me how spicy I wanted it. I went with the hottest available which was ghost pepper honey. It was actually fairly spicy, which I'm all in for so keep that in mind. It would have been nice if the menu listed spice options, but thankfully the server informed me.
The Guy Burger was fantastic and cooked to a perfect medium-well.
The Big Easy was my wife's favorite because the beer batter on the shrimp was perfectly done and the portion was huge. I could've just eaten a plate of that shrimp by itself. They have Louisiana hot sauce available.
The fried okra was amazing, the sweet potato fries were good, but dusted with sugar which is not my favorite way to eat them. If you like the crispy slightly burnt pieces of brussels when you bake them at home then you're in luck because here they give you a bowl full covered in a light balsamic glaze. Don't hesitate to ask for ranch dressing because its definitely house made...
