My father, a huge train buff, and I (a smaller one) got into Las Cruces later in the day, but still wanted to check out the museum, even if we were just able to see the caboose. We got there at 4:15, and we didn't want to stop the workers from closing up, so we headed towards the caboose. The curator, Kyle, came out and was so hospitable and welcomed us in, taking time out of his life to really show us around and give us an in depth look. Read moreThe brick pavers around the building are crisp, new immaculate and expertly laid giving you a hint as to the restoration quality done to the old station. Lots of old railroad gear on display, a great story of the first woman engineer who is still employed by the railroad but now in the role of a safety director. In the back are middle trains the kids can play with and a nice water cooler. The woman at the front desk is very knowledgeable and happily informed you of everything around you including the different phases of remodel. Read moreThis isn't a big museum but if you have any interest in trains and railway history it's well worth it. Unfortunately when I went the model trains weren't running but they were still nice to look at and the collection of toy trains was fun to see.
I was more interested in the railway equipment history and found it very interesting. There are a fair number of pieces of old railway equipment, Pullman items, old advertisements, etc that I enjoyed.
