We went to the Night Gallery for the first time last night and it was fantastic! As soon as I walked in I felt welcome. There was an acoustic guitar duo playing, a laid back and friendly group of people sitting at tables and listening to the music and art EVERYWHERE.
The gallery looks smallish on the outside, but once you get inside it becomes obvious that it's much larger than it looks. There are a bunch of rooms and hallways filled with artwork of all kinds and of all different price ranges, which is great because it meant that I was actually able to buy something.
What makes the Night Gallery so special is that it takes something that many people see as snooty (an art gallery) and makes it welcoming and accessible, while still offering very high quality, interesting and unique art. With the addition of a comfortable place to sit, talk and listen to live, local music. Often the artists themselves are there, my husband and I had a chance to talk to one of the sculptors exhibiting his art (really cool skeletal figures made out of railroad spikes).
