Bluff Park is unusual as parks go. It is an oceanfront park over 8 blocks long resting on some of Long Beach's priciest real estate -- Ocean Blvd. There is a large and very long rectangle of grass punctuated by beautiful mature trees along a high bluff overlooking the sea, the unusual Thumb Islands (completely unique in the world to Long Beach), and Catalina Island.

You can witness all kinds of things on any given day. Some people are strolling with family and friends. Others are walking their dogs. It's fun to watch the massive container ships cooling their "jets" before approaching the Port of Long Beach. Some folks are having picnics, there are lovers canoodling, some are parked in a portable chair with a good book, and some are lying in the grass watching the clouds float by. Still others sit quietly at one of the many benches along the path, looking out to sea.

Unlike other parks, it's very transparent and out in the open. There really is no place for anyone to hide, and so it feels perfectly safe. I sometimes walk here in the evening and the energy is always good. And just across the street is the beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary, who I call Ocean Mary, and who I like to think keeps an eye on the proceedings.

One day I saw an artist working on a painting with her brushes and paints spread out on the grass. Another time I watched some guys flying large toy planes out over the beach. The last time I was there I saw a wedding party posing on the bluff for pictures on a beautiful sunny day. I bet those pictures will be unforgettable. What...
