There are some good food options here (we had some pretty good fish and shrimp tacos at El Cachanella), but parking is not great and a third of the vendors are selling dumb Tijuana tourist junk (like fake velvet paintings of Scarface and genital shaped water bottles). So, unfortunately it's not recommended for families, there are pictures of male and female parts up on posters (because they sell deserts in the shape of them as well as toys and coffee cups, etc.) and pictures of gangsters and drug lords...so...judge whether you want your kid seeing that....
The actual market is set up in an alleyway with old decommissioned train tracks in the middle so if you don't look at your feet you'll trip...a lot. This is not someplace to take someone in a wheelchair or on crutches.
That said, if you're already in the area (as we were) on a Saturday and you're hungry this might be your best bet to get some good tacos or horchata or fresh queso, etc. The folks at El Cachanella were very nice and walked us through the menu, set us up with ample limes and hot sauce. The lady at the horchata stand (further back) was.... pretty annoyed, not sure why, maybe was just having a bad day. But the drinks were all good.
Also a good thing is that lots of vendors were giving out samples so you can decide...
