Motor Avenue Farmer's Market is held every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. It consists of small farmers, home businesses and private entrepreneurs, all very friendly and welcoming. Fresh veggies and fruits are available at slightly higher rates for small quantities and packs but when bought more, one can get a good deal. Gerardo gave me a handful of extra fresh pea pods and strawberries to my friend. Some vendors charge extra for card transactions so bring cash with you in $1, $5, $10 and $20 denomination. Any bill more than $20 is not very welcomed and sometimes declined depending upon what time of the day it is. Late customers may find vendors accepting bigger bills after doing cash business and having enough to return the change. Late customers, though find left over items or sold out stalls, may find good deals on left-over fresh produce or edible items since vendors want to sell them fast. Items available besides fresh produce are Chinese Food Vendors like Mercedes who have a good sense of humor and wit. She sells frozen items consisting of dumplings, bao, and rolls of assorted fillings. Indian Food vendor, Puja, sells whole Mung bean Khichree (a creamy rice and mung bean dish) with authentic Indian sides is to die for. Another stall worth mentioning is the one selling hummus, and flavored yogurts. They develop the yogurt with special probiotics and they taste delicious. Try their Rose and Hazelnut flavors. Bakery items, and baked bread of various varieties from JP Bakery is also there who also offer freshly baked pizza on site and to compliment breads a new vendor started today with her homemade jams that are naturally sweetened with agave, apple juice or honey. The most amazing items for me were "Blue" organic Chicken eggs and two varieties of brown eggs with yellow and orange color yolks. Besides edibles there were jewelery stalls, candles and beeswax items, knitted and weaved South American artifacts like runners, mats, pillow covers, bags, totes and pouches. There is a stall for tarot card readings at the Motor Avenue end with games like "Janga" and "Toss the Pillow" inn between the table and benches in the center aisles. It was a refreshing experience overall for early risers to enjoy fresh air, eat, smell various aromas and socialize while...
Read moreThis should never be called a “Farmers Market”. There are (at most) only 2-3 produce vendors and I have yet failed to see what should look like fresh picked farm fruit or vegetables. When I was there one vendor was displaying oranges that still had stickers on them!! The rest of the street is cluttered with tables selling food, nick knacks and over priced home made “stuff”. The parking is non-existent, you have to go down Motor Ave to a parking lot attached to a religious organization to park. We were so excited to learn that there would be a Farmers Market here in Cheviot, but it has been nothing more than a major disappointment, as evidenced by the very, very few people that visit it. In addition to all that, this Market causes a major neighborhood disturbance, because for most of the day it blocks direct access to the freeway!!! Many people just wish it would go away, or perhaps, get off the street and move the market over to the empty lot that now is being used to...
Read moreIncredibly tiny market; really unbelievably so. 10-12 stalls. Bad luck in our neighborhood that this is the only one around unless you wanna drive elsewhere. None of the vendors here give samples of anything, probably because not a single one of them has any competition here; so if you don't wanna buy without tasting 1st, I guess they feel they've got you cornered since you can't get those items from anyone else at this market - no one else to buy from.
Some vendors randomly disappear with no notice. You take a liking to someone's products, and one week they're just not there. "Come back next week" the other folks here say. Welp; that's your morning coming over here completely wasted, and you've gotta set aside another Sunday morning to come here, and hope they'll show up that time - no guarantee though!
Oh, and most of them don't even put out the merchandise properly till some...
