I did the Sivananda teacher training 28 years ago in India, but lapsed in my practice. I found myself in LA for a month and decided to hire an instructor from the Sivananda Center in LA.
The style of yoga was exactly the same as I'd learned nearly three decades ago. This is the real deal. I was tired of yoga classes in the US and Canada that are almost exclusively Vinyasa Flow. I don't want to work up a sweat and be completely exhausted at the end of each class. The Sivananda approach emphasizes breathwork and finding the balance between exertion and relaxation. At age 54, I'm not interested in yoga-aerobics!
The staff at the center, particularly Director Karuna Devi, as well as Gopita and Iswara are extremely kind and knowledgable. I was welcomed with open arms to their holiday season celebration and have had only positive and warm interactions at the center and during my private instruction.
The center provides an attractive and welcoming space for yoga practice.
If you want a yoga practice that does not include endless sequences of 'downward facing dog' taught by a 21-year old who philosophizes about life while you are sweating buckets, this is your place. Sivananda yoga provides a healthful, spiritual practice that is straight-forward and consistent.
Thank you, Karuna Devi, Gopita and Iswara for bringing yoga back...
Read moreI had a wonderful stay at the center, the Swami and her supporting team, are knowledgeable, kind and wonderful guides in all the practices. I arrived at a time of deep grief in need of some space and time. I received all of that and more from the people, the center the environment of peace that is and around the center. I quarantined on arrival to keep all safe and well at this time. My quarantine actually became a beautiful and unexpected start to my stay, a lovely room, a place to meditate and space for Yoga reading eating, you have access to all the centers programs on line, Yoga Meditation Satsang, workshops. There was a lovely light flooding in every day and direct access to the outside space at the center where you will find the yoga deck, the gardens that hold space for fruit giving flowering trees, a very amusing nut busting squirrel, birds singing, a real oasis of calm and rest. During my quarantine I was delivered three healthy beautiful meals a day, which nourished my body and mind, I am home now and I just made one of the Prana bursting soups that was prepared for me in the center, a new firm favorite now, I received a gift of time, to go in, inside me. Thereafter I joined inside and outside on the deck the offerings from the center to further support my healing. I will certainly be returning...
