Viet Hoa Food Market — Attraction in Louisville

Ah, so the only review for this place here at this time is one-star, which doesn't make sense to me, which is why I'm writing this. Yes, I give it five stars, I love it. I've been shopping here for years.

The place is the size of a large-ish neighborhood market, no frills. It's sort of a produce market right up front, then a refrigerated section running up the right side, a frozen section running up the left side, and most of the middle is taken up by grocery aisles, with everything from crockery/utensils to noodles galore to sauces/condiments to canned stuff, snacks etc etc. Roughly a quarter of the store in the back is a seafood/meat section with a fishmonger's/butcher's deal in the very back.

I go here in part for the pretty good selection of fresh veggies typical of Asian cuisines. They have a nice selection of mushrooms, some of which are difficult to find at other places, fresh at least, like bunashimeji and trumpet. I like the pricing: fresh shiitake (nice ones, with split tops) are $5.99/lb, which is like a third of what they sell for at Whole Foods. They also always have fresh galangal! Basically their not-so-huge produce section is dense, there is lots of stuff, and the goods have always been in good condition, which is not true of all Asian stores.

There's a wide variety of sauces and condiments, I especially like their curry paste selection; there are plenty of vegan ones (e.g. no shrimp paste - they don't say "vegan" but they are per the ingredient list).

The back quarter is a combo of frozen seafood and meat etc. in a couple of rows of open chest freezers, and, in the very back, fresh/refrigerated seafood/meat and some live seafood, with a service counter. It's a kind of place where you can get a pig's head or a prepackaged pound or two of actual duck heads or a quart of pig's blood. Not my thing, since I'm eating plant-based only, but if you're an omnivore and adventurous then you might have fun here.

Note: the store has always been in good condition, but, because of the back section, it often smells like a fishmonger's. Doesn't bother me at all, just a word of warning if that's a red flag for you, some folks can't stand it. I go there regularly for some fresh produce that's just better and cheaper than elsewhere (when it can be found elsewhere), and also Asian pantry essentials. There's always been traffic. That's...

I would not recommend going to this store. My mom and I have been going here for years, but lately the cashiers have been very suspicious. Today my mom and I were in the check-out line, and the cashier (older lady with glasses) asked if it's a credit card. She then snatched the card out of my mom's hands, and looked at the back of the card. This was disrespectful because you do not take someone's card out of their hands without their permission. And when my mom complained to the cashier, she ignored her. When the other cashier tried to explain to her what she did, the cashier lady didn't apologize for what she did. This cashier was very suspicious because she was on FaceTime while at the same time working, and when my mom went back into the check-out line to complain, my mom saw the cashier lady take another customer's card to look at the back of it. I bought a new bag of rice from this store which was full of white nasty worms. When I opened my rice cooker to eat, I found those nasty worms in my rice cooker, suspecting it was the rice, I opened my rice bag and found a lot of white worms in the "newly" bought rice bag that I bought from this store. Since it was so nasty, I drove about 40 minutes taking the rice bag and literally show those nasty worms to the manager. The manager was so rude, impolite and very disrespectful. She didn't even offer apology for it. I have decided not to buy any "rice" from Viet Hoa again. If you want to eat rice filled with worms and talk to this rude manager you can try buying, but if not, never buy rice from this store. If you've bought it, make sure there's no white nasty worms...
