BRING: Water for all (you're in the sun the whole time if you're lucky), sunscreen, and doggie bags (you'll have to carry it all the way out, but it's better than stepping in it the next time you visit, right?)
Had a random Thursday off so I decided to explore the park at Marin Headlands with my dog. With miles of voice command off-leash trails, this park area is amazing, beautiful, and free. From the visitor center, we did the Lagoon - Miwok - Coastal Trails loop for a total of about 5-6 miles and moderate amounts of "up" along the way. We putzed around and stopped a lot for photos and played fetch at Rodeo Beach, even then the whole loop took only about 2 hours. We encountered only 3 other groups on the Miwok, the Coastal trail has a closer parking lot and also more people around the battery and the top, but still surprisingly uncrowded for a nice hike this close...

However, keep in mind: you will not have enough time to enjoy everything out there at once, so plan the day! Especially if you're going to attempt the Tennessee Valley Beach expedition; from the nearest trailhead (on bike) it takes more than an hour-and-a-half for most people, each way, so you need plenty of time.
