We did competition gymnastics with them, and I had several conversations throughout the year with the coach about her methods because it was heavily affecting my daughterâs self-esteem and confidence. Her coach kept brushing it off, even suggesting once that my daughter was lying, and I decided to involve the owner of the gym. He was incredibly condescending, and when we said we wouldnât be coming back next year, he said âIn my experience, itâs the girls that arenât any good that quitâ, along with a couple more unkind generalizations about the young women that are supposed to be in his care. In short, the coaches are inflexible, apparently only know one coaching method, and are not willing to work with their athletes if their âtough loveâ (read: emotionally manipulative and borderline verbal abusive) tactics donât work.
