Donna Bender’s ‘Local Girl’s Guide to Maui’ helped make my trip to Maui the trip of a lifetime. It’s a compendium of Donna’s encyclopedic knowledge of the island and its offerings (she’s a true local girl herself, as the guide’s title suggests), but thoughtfully curated to give you only the best and most local highlights, and helps you avoid the bland, the tourist-trappy, and the mediocre.

I pride myself in doing extensive research before any trip, and initially was concerned that I'd be wasting $15, having already done weeks of my own internet sleuthing. How wrong I was! Thanks to her, I was eating Maui’s freshest, most affordable poke in places only the locals go, getting to rub shoulders with locals in real local places, and glimpsing a side of island life most tourists don’t see. I’m buying a copy of the guide as a gift to friends who are going there next month.

Because of how great the guide was, I ended up booking my accommodation with Donna, who – in the middle of high summer season - magically secured us exactly what we‘d dreamed of: a quiet, modern, yet homey condo with jaw-dropping views (and air conditioning!) steps away from the best snorkeling on Maui. And all for the same price as booking directly through the condo resort itself.

This guide is a huge home run for the first time visitor as well as the returning Maui visitor. It's really, really good and give incredible insider information from a Maui local! The guide is well laid out in a logical fashion which makes finding the information fast and easy. The combination of the writing style, which is easy to read on the fly and relaxed but professional, with the easy to navigate topics provides a perfect comprehensive guide for anyone visiting or even living on Maui.

What we found especially helpful were spot on details on local shopping and dining, which helped us make decisions about how to manage our vacation budget--a key element for many people visiting Hawaii. Additionally, sections on everything from culture and language to personal responsibility were helpful. Bottom line; this guide delivers so much for it's price that it's a must for anyone...

I was born and raised on Oahu but live in Colorado now and I've been going to Maui regularly for years. It was great getting information from a local girl's perspective.

At home in Colorado I long for the food in Hawaii and this guide is superb in identifying places serving real local food that I otherwise would have missed completely.
