Dr. Karl Coutinho took care of my husband who had a severe urethral stricture post a TURP procedure this past August 2023. The TURP was earlier in March 2023 elsewhere.

We consider ourselves blessed to have found Dr. Coutinho who had more to offer than repeated bladder catheterization or a transurethral incision bound to fail even in short term, options suggested to us by esteemed urologists taking care of my husband after the TURP. Only one of the urologists involved in his care at the time mentioned that we should seek help from a fellowship trained Reconstructive Urologist. As we searched for one, we realized that there were very few reconstructive urologists and the wait to get the first appointment was long. It was by chance that we discovered Dr. Coutinho, and in Dr. Coutinho, we found a doctor who not only had the training and knowledge to treat my husband’s condition, but was caring and compassionate, gentle in his manner, and listened to the patient. And very important to us, he accommodated us at very short notice. Within days of making contact, we had our first appointment and within a week my husband’s procedure was done. By the time the procedure was done, the stricture was very severe as Dr. Coutinho had predicted. Despite its severity, Dr. Coutinho possessed the skill to dilate it successfully, having done many such procedures in the last few years.

I had a stricture in my urethra, which is a small area where it is narrower than the rest of the length of the tube. I have had this problem for a long time, once previously having had a relatively unsuccessful surgery. The moment Dr. Coutinho walked into the examining room, I knew things were finally going to change. First of all, he exudes both confidence and pragmatism. He is someone who knows the literature and despite his youthful appearance has been there before when it comes to surgical procedures, something everyone wants in a surgeon. The way he presented my surgical options was forthright and clear. I had to decide between a procedure with a long recovery time with a 90% success rate and one with a much shorter recovery that had a 70% success rate.
