Not worth your time or money. Go to Glorioso's Italian Market on Brady Street instead. We were on the southside today and decided to try G. Groppi Food Market. After getting groceries and sandwiches, asked the salesperson if we could eat on the patio (I am handicapped and could not sit on the bar stools). He told us "yes" and because it was a rare 45 degree December day, we went outside to enjoy. My husband took the groceries up to the checkout and told the salesperson that we were eating three sandwiches on the patio and what they were. He paid the $190.43 for everything and came back to the patio to eat with us. When we were finished, my youngest took the two bags of groceries out to the car. My husband was holding the door for me when a salesperson stopped me to ask if I had paid for items from the deli; I told him "yes". He told me "well, you got things from the salads and didn't pay for them". He then asked for my receipt. I produced the receipt from my purse, he looked it over, said "Ohh" and then handed the slip back to me. The salesperson that checked my husband out told us "Thanks for coming in; hope to see you again". I looked them in the face and said "No, we will not be back." I was also disappointed by the food. I thought $10 and $12 sandwiches would be much better. The sandwich bread was okay but the meats and tomatoes inside not very good. Their facebook page looked really good but no, it wasn't. Don't waste you time or money at G. Groppi...
Read moreBelow is my old review of a bad experience here. I hadn’t been back since the old review, but just recently I moved to Bayview and decided to give it another try. My last interaction with an employee was funny and helpful. She was a such a delight and she actually made me smile. My girlfriend also has had good experiences since the old review.
Old review I normally love this place. It's cute, even though it's more expensive then my local grocery store, this store just has a cute feeling about it. I love going here, but the last time I was in (a few hours ago) the woman there was so insanely rude that my girlfriend almost started yelling at her. I don't know what her problem was, but she almost charged my girlfriend, knowninly, the wrong amount before someone else (the manager?) pointed out that she was about to charge her card $296! The woman fixed it, but was so rude about it. My girlfriend and I both bought a bunch of stuff from the bakery, and while looking at it the woman (I think named Kate or something like that) was staring at us looking but didn't offer any help. Another employee had to tell her to help us. As we were picking out the baked good we told her they were separate order, but while checking out she told someone she would have to void the transaction because she added them all together. I work at a retail store in Bay View and I would NEVER treat a customer the way she treated us. I was very tempted to call the store and tell them about...
Read moreI've come here since childhood, and I was very disappointed to see what has become of the store. There isn't a great variety of produce anymore, and the bakery is way overpriced for the quality. They have a large array of Italian named desserts which do not taste authentic. It appears they named the desserts after Italian classics for show rather than for providing the classic Italian treats. Based on the price, I would expect these to be not only authentic but delicious. The desserts taste stale and were disappointing.
They expanded the back of the store to include a huge meat/seafood section which has a ton of product, but the product is lacking in flavor and quality.
It appears the expansion was made to house a liquor/wine section rather than provide more authentic Italian foods as that is the largest area of the store.
The store used to be small and quaint. It smelled of fresh rolls and sausage when you'd enter. Groppi's used to be known for the quality of the meat, deli, and bakery. Unfortunately, it seems the store has put more effort into making a profit than keeping up with the authentic Italian selection and quality of product they...
