I went to Mark at Frameworthy to have 2 large painted canvases stretched that I bought online. I received two other quotes, but went with Mark (even though he was charging significantly more), because he was patient, answered questions, seemed very knowledgeable, and I wanted to make sure it was done correctly. Up to this point, I would give him 5/5 stars.
After the work was done, one canvas turned out perfectly the other had noticeable wrinkles/waves in the canvas under uneven lighting conditions. I played phone tag with Mark exchanging a couple voicemails, but was never able to connect for an actual conversation. After 2 voicemails we switched to email because I wanted to send him photos of what I was describing (even though he never requested them). There he responded with long messages. I requested two times to set up a time to have a phone call since we were unable to connect and email being a less-than-ideal way to communicate, but at this point he declined stated he wanted to have “documentation” of what was discussed.
Long story short, his conclusion was the wrinkles/waves were likely due to 2 reasons. Primarily, the thick paint on the canvas and the technique used by the artist prevented the canvas from being fully stretched. Secondarily, there may have been further loosening of the canvas during my transport of the canvas. For the first reason, I contacted the artist and she stated the paint thickness is absolutely not the cause because she uses high quality flexible paint and no other customer ever had this problem. She also stated she stretches canvases herself and that its clear the canvas needs to be restretched and is not fully stretched. She said she can easily fix the problem, but unfortunately is not local. For the second reason related to transport, Mark repeatedly mentioned how I transported the canvas in the back of a pick up truck was not a good idea may have loosened this stretch. He did so even after I clarified 3 times this is not the case. The canvas that turned out perfectly was transported in the pick up truck because its dimensions were 60x60 and did not fit in a vehicle, but the canvas that did not turn out was transported flat in the back of an SUV with its seats down because its dimensions are 72x30. Finally, he did apologize saying he forgot that detail, but then went on to say maybe its because I put blankets over top of the canvas. I never did this either. I am completely confident we did not loosen to the stretch with transport. The one mistake I made is the canvas was wrapped in plastic when we picked it up and hard to visualize. I should have inspected it very closely before leaving with it, but to be fair, the waves in the canvas can only be seen under uneven lighting conditions and his studio is very well lit.
At this point, I do not trust Mark at all. Overall, he tried to deflect blame and not once even considered he made a mistake. He never asked for photos before giving his conclusion and I had to request to send them to him. He refused to restretch the canvas stating it wont fix the issue and may even make it worse. His assessment is in direct conflict with the artists assessment. He made many misleading and inaccurate statements about the transport in his “documentation trail”. Without even having a phone conversation, he said via email he is “done with this transaction”.
Obviously, I am not satisfied and do not feel listened to as a customer. In a final email, I requested a 25% discount on the not fully stretched canvas in exchange for not leaving a negative review. Mark’s response was he is documenting the above as harassment and a threat and taking necessary actions. In my opinion, this a classic example of a business gaslighting and taking advantage of the defenseless customer who is rightly not happy with what they paid good money for. Mark does not have any respect or empathy for his customers. Do not expect him to take any responsibility or offer a fair or reasonable solution if you are...
