I go to dog park area in the south end at least 5 days a week. Peak times are in the mornings around 8 am, and the evening around 6 pm or an hour before sunset, whichever is earlier. Usually 15 to 30 dogs in the evening, 3 to 15 in the morning.
On the south end is a pair of fenced areas for the dog park. The areas are labeled as large and small, but that is not how it is used. There is a large tree shading the north fenced in area, making it cooler. So in the summer, people prefer that side, and prefer the south side in the winter. The other side gets used by dogs that are not socialized yet, so that they can safely socialize through the fence. Once they calm down they slowly get integrated.
Amenities: Water and plastic bags are provided by the city, and supplemented by people who use the park. There is a concrete pad and bench near the entrance, and 2 other pads and benches in each area.
Poop: You are expected to pick up after your dog. If you can’t find it, and find another pile, get that one, as long as you remove a pile it counts. Usually there are no obvious extra piles. We try and keep the park clean and inviting.
Children: Children need to be accompanied by an adult, especially for the first few visits.
New dogs: Have all of your shots, for puppies, this often means waiting till they are 8 weeks old. If your dog is not spayed or neutered, and fertile, it may cause fights, or make puppies. City rules say only fixed pets, but be sensible. Take off the leash before entering the park in the area provided. When it is on the leash, it will attempt to defend you, off the leash, it will play.
The Pavilion: Nearby is a covered pavilion that gets used for birthday parties on the weekends, and as a dance and exercise area for a Martigras school organization in the summer evenings. Sometimes homeless people do go there, but they have been well behaved for...
Read moreThis is a very well maintained park. Spacious grass area for tossing a ball or just lying about and soaking up sun. In the center sits a large gazebo, with power supply, where families often hold celebrations. Separate fair sized dog park. A children's play area with plenty of fun ways to release their seemingly infinite amounts of energy, and a decent skate park for those with X-treme tendencies. I've yet to see anyone land the Too Chi Flip (540 flip to dark slide.) For the record, I, alias Impromptu Revival, invented the Too Chi Flip. Full disclosure, no I can not perform it. To do so, one must be in the...
Read moreAfter dark? Stay away or don't come alone!! I live right around the corner and will not walk through there without my gun in hand. Been stopped by cops twice asking why I was carrying a gun in plain sight, I was honest and told them both times. Both times I was told to have a good night and be safe. They didn't even as for my permit or check the guns serial. Yes a few of them know me from working the store next to the PD station, but those two didn't lol. Just be safe! If before 1am I am right across...
