This was a great park, now it is less than average. Monterey Park prides itself on the fact that there’s a park within a 1 mile radius from any residential home. Having that many parks includes constant upkeeping, maintenance, just to name 2. Which they don’t, due to “lack of funding.” Barnes park was great because it had a pool. The pool is no more, and there are no plans to replace, due to “lack of funding.” The restrooms are in dire need of renovation, due to “lack of funding.” There’s water leakage by the water controllers. What a waste of water. MPk preaches conservation, yet they don’t take their own medicine. Fix it and the money you save would more than make up for the repairs. A no-brainer.
I give this park 2-stars because it hosts great events, Farmers market, movie nights, Independence Day fireworks, just...
Read moreThe playground rules still apply as adults. Barnes Park is a public green space that measures approximately 17 acres, and is located at the heart of Monterey Park. It seems this park was newly remodeled and upgraded. This park features a community center, basketball gym, amphitheater/memorial bowl, sheltered picnic pavilion, Olympic size pool, lighted softball field, tennis courts, and children's play area. Plenty of parking spot. Furthermore, this park has close proximity to the local police department and the Boys and Girls club. Most park goers were kids, adults and young families. Basically it's quite diverse and multicultural. I dig it. There were no homeless person lurking around when I visited so that's bloody great. Overall, this is a great park with excellent features. I highly...
Read moreThe central public space of Monterey Park. City Hall, the cops, the American Legion, our fantastic local library, low cost senior apartments, the local bus transit hub, the Boys and Girls Club are all nearby. The park features pickle ball, clean restrooms, frequent fireworks shows, Monterey Parks only public all ages rave (I kid you not even a little) and this week, the Cherry Blossom Festival, which apparently requires a full on carnival to properly celebrate. Barnes Park tries very hard to be all things to all people. It mostly succeeds. If there's a better large public park in the SGV, I haven't taken a nap in it. Downside: no frisbee golf course. There never is. It's perpetually...
