The depot is a wonderful old restored train station building that serves people who use the Cardinal Greenway. However, I was somewhat unhappy with my most recent visit. I had a friend from Brazil visiting me with his girlfriend. They were doing a roadtrip across the US, so I offered to take them on a 3-mile hike along the Cardinal and White River Greenways. I started by showing them the Little Free Library and then the inside of the Depot. As soon as we entered, I had them sign the guestbook. As they were doing that, a woman behind the counter said "Can I help you?" She was not smiling at all. I told her that I was just showing them around. We looked at some of the historic photos on display and then checked out the gift shop. We were waiting for my brother to show up, since he would be walking with us, so we sat down at the table there. The woman walked up to us and asked, "Is there some sort of a problem?" I politely told her that we were just waiting for my brother, since he was on his way to hike with us. Then after some minutes, we left. The woman said nothing. She seemed to resent us being there.
The following day, my Brazilian friend realized that he had lost his wallet. So he was checking at all the places he had visited. I stayed in the car while he and his girlfriend checked at the Depot. The same woman was there. She told him no one had found a wallet. Before they left, they took another look inside the gift shop. The woman immediately followed them in and said, "I thought you came here regarding a wallet." So they left.
Since none of the places we checked had my friend's wallet, we went back later that day to retrace the steps of our hike. This time we stayed out of the Depot. Amazingly, he actually did find his wallet. He also came across someone's dropped credit card. He actually felt it was necessary to turn it in at the Depot, in case the owner thought to look for it there. So back we went. I stayed outside. He told me she had actually been somewhat friendly that time and even smiled. But she also talked a lot about how the Greenway is supported by contributions from donors. He said he had the impression that she was hoping they would become donors. If that's true, it's kind of strange that she would think that foreign tourists would sign up to become donors.
Anyway, I just felt like getting this off my chest. The Depot used to be a wonderful resource for trail users. The first time I went visited it, the fellow working there was extremely helpful. He made sure I had a map and answered all my questions. But now it's apparently being run by someone who doesn't like to deal with the public. I will definitely continue to use the Greenway and the Depot parking lot, but I don't plan to go back inside the Depot...
Read moreRode the CG from Gaston, Indiana trailhead to Losantsville, Indiana where our group stopped at the Amish grocery store for beverages & food on 10/05/24 before heading back. I love coming down from Ft Wayne to bike this trail & have done so for well over 15 yrs. I have biked it all, including the north area to Converse, Indiana where it currently ends. Our group consisted of 4 riders of all biking experience levels. A couple miles south of Muncie, one of our riders experienced a flat while trying to avoid a very large crack in the asphalt. The CG pavement is in the worst shape ive personally ever rode it. There are cracks that could eat both roadbike tires & wreck you. CG volunteers have done a good job of painting an outline around most but not all. You better be paying attention constantly or if caught in these cracks, you will go down. Most are directly in the middle of the path. The areas of asphalt erosion which is the worst, is 1/2 the length of a roadbike. I did email the Cardinal Greenway and received a reply rather quickly which said. They are waiting for funds to repair those areas. What? What happened to the funds Gov Holcomb distributed to the trail system in 2021- 2022. This is a very scenic bike path that when maintained is fabulous & beautiful. Right now, its not. It is scenic. Don't let my review stop you from riding & experiencing it. Let my review be a guide to constantly keep an eye out to avoid these cracks which will be damn near impossible to see when the leaves fall and cover the cracks. On a positive note. Most everyone is friendly and this time of year will be beautiful with the leaves turning colors. Hope these issues get fixed, repaired &...
Read moreThe City of Muncie should count their lucky stars for having such a great feature in the community. I can't say enough good things about the Greenway. I live in Louisville, and while we have a great trail system here too, it's nothing like the experience you get out of the greenway. The trail is an old rail-way, so you get access to areas and landscapes you otherwise would never get access to. It's like taking a bike ride in America's backyard. They have a lot of community events like 5K runs, Muncie Bike Fest (which I donate my DJ Services), the Turkey Trot. I really miss having the greenway available to me, but it makes my visits to Muncie something to...
