Coney is a bustling classic resort beach with a fishing pier, boardwalk, concession stands, amusement parks, 1920s ferris wheel, 1920s roller coaster, game arcades, NY aquarium, pro baseball stadium, restaurants, bars, outdoor seating, freak exhibit theatre, weekly summer fireworks, bathrooms, showers, lifeguard stations, handball courts, Mermaid Parade in June, hot dog eating contest in July, sand sculpture contest in August, Polar Bear Club beach plunge on New Years Day, and so much more.
It's all right there at the end of the NYC subway in Brooklyn.
Coney is definitely NOT a serene or secluded beach, but is a very active summer spot.
Nearby, a much less crowded beach (also right on the subway) is Brighton Beach. The same board walk in Coney Island extends into Brighton, which also has restaurants, bathrooms, bars, outdoor seating, showers, and summer lifeguards. It is also the centre of New York City's Russian community, so expect to see signs in Cyrillic in the retail district.
If you want a more moderately secluded beach not far, I might suggest Manhattan Beach near Brighton, but closer to the Sheepshead Bay subway station (at least 10 minute walk). It has basic amenities like bathrooms.
Further away, in that direction, is Plumb Beach, which is probably not clean enough for swimming and has excessive expressway noise coming from behind it, but is very secluded and is popular with family cookouts in the day and teen bonfires at night.
For a much more peaceful beach, I might suggest Jacob Riis Park's beach on Rockaway Island towards the right side and the fort.
Riis Park to the left, and near the houses, can often be anything but peaceful (especially on Summer weekends) as it seems to be the poor man's Fire Island, with loud LGBTQ parties going...
Read moreConey Island Beach is full of historic significance—it was one of America’s earliest seaside resorts in the 1800s, and it’s home to iconic landmarks like the Cyclone roller coaster (opened in 1927 and still running) and the Wonder Wheel (1920), both designated NYC landmarks.
Parking is not easy to find for free, but if you’re willing to pay about $13, you can park right behind the Brooklyn Cyclones stadium, which is very convenient. Since it’s the end of August, the beach wasn’t too crowded, and the cleanliness has definitely improved compared to past visits. That said, you still catch whiffs of weed in the air from time to time.
The restrooms are somewhat okay—they are kept fairly clean, but nothing special. The boardwalk area gives you access to two amusement parks: Luna Park and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. A lot of people get confused because they’re right next to each other. Luna Park has many thrill rides, but it’s very expensive. Deno’s is smaller and more family-oriented, but be careful not to buy ride cards from the wrong park by mistake. The iconic Wonder Wheel actually belongs to Deno’s, not Luna.
Both parks have raised prices a lot in recent years, so keep that in mind if you’re planning a family outing. Overall, though, Coney Island is worth visiting for its history, beach, and boardwalk vibe—it’s a classic New...
