From Landfill to Urban Living Organism | A Case Study of Freshkills Park Case Study 1: Freshkills Park, New York Freshkills Park is located on the western shore of Staten Island, New York City. Once the site of the largest landfill in New York—Fresh Kills Landfill—long-term waste pollution severely degraded its natural ecosystem. Spanning approximately 891 hectares (three times the size of Central Park), the site consisted of 45% waste mounds and 55% streams, wetlands, and depressions. In 2001, the New York City government ordered the permanent closure of the landfill and initiated its ecological restoration and transformation. To reimagine it as a park, the city hosted an international landscape design competition, which garnered widespread global attention. Ultimately, the "Lifescape" proposal by Field Operations, led by James Corner, stood out and became the master plan for Freshkills Park. The overarching theme of the master plan is "Lifescape—New York’s New Public Ground." The design team defined "Lifescape" as "program + habitat + circulation," symbolizing that Freshkills Park is not static but a dynamic, living landscape. Over 688.5 hectares of the park have been developed as undisturbed natural ecological zones, including open water, salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, meadows, and woodlands. Through ecological restoration and innovative landscape design, these areas provide diverse habitats for wildlife, such as birds and plants. Meanwhile, an interwoven network of land and water pathways creates a multi-layered circulation framework for the park. Together, these 891 hectares of program spaces, habitats, and transportation systems form the foundation of Freshkills Park’s "Lifescape." #LandfillLandscapeDesign

Rode my bike from Brooklyn and took the ferry to check this place out. It was a great little day trip. I don’t really know how to rate the park, as it is a really bizarre place. In any sense it’s amazing that they could turn a landfill into fields of tall grass so big you feel like you’re lost in Kansas somewhere. The air does smell fresh, but there were some concerning things. For example, there was rust colored runoff throughout the park. I was told by a park attendant that this comes from the minerals which help decompose the garbage. Anyway, I was here over a year ago so the photos are old but definitely check this place out if you get the opportunity.

Truly an Awe-inspiring vatange point on Staten Island from a whole New prospective ... We always looked West from the Mall and high points on the island towards the other side of Fresh kills,..now a fresh new view and pleasant walkway from 350 Wild Avenue. Ample parking is available... just don't cut through the Old L.A. fitness parking area (it is blocked off). The view of the river from the Observatory and the pier are exceptional and a must-see!!!

Cant say much about the "Park".. but I fondly remember working there when it was the landfill and seeing the bubbling Leachate leaking out of the sides of the hills or smelling the rotten egg odor of Hydrogen Sulfide emanating from areas. Back in the days Of active dumping in the truck fill I recall Areas that were hot and smoldering from Methane that was probably burning under the ground. We called them bank fires. Not sure if I would be comfortable going there in a recreational setting...

Excellent option to go for a different adventure in New York. I been visiting and seeing the improvement they are making in this former landfill. It's impressing and very promising for the future generations of the Tri-State area.

I already have found memories here. If you feel adventurous and have a spare time don't miss out and visit the park whenever they have openings. Make sure to subscribe to the email newsletter for info about the park and...
